Open Singing Day, 9 February 2019: Rutter's Requiem and Carr's Requiem for an Angel
St Mary's Church, Reigate, 10am - 4pm
I hope you will want to join us for our next Open Singing Day on Saturday, 9th February 2019 at St Mary's Church, Reigate. Under Leslie Olive's inspiring musical direction, we will work on two beautiful, melodious works: John Rutter's Requiem and Paul Carr's Requiem for an Angel.
Classic FM described Rutter's work as follows:
"John Rutter unashamedly composes instantly memorable tunes. In a world where so many composers believe music is no longer primarily about melody, Rutter stands out as someone who defiantly bucks that trend. Nowhere is it more evident than in his glorious Requiem. Composed in 1985, the work is reminiscent of the Requiem of Fauré for its simplicity, brevity and rich choral writing."

Reviewing Carr's work, Classical Music Sentinel wrote: "In his Requiem for an Angel, beautiful melodies, and lots of them, are what drives the music forward. Imagine if you can the combination of John Rutter's choral writing, Paul McCartney's melodic flair in his excursions in this genre, Gerald Finzi's orchestral sound, and a slight whiff of the essence within Leonard Bernstein's Mass, and you would have an idea of what Paul Carr's music sounds like. And unlike the grim finality of most Requiem Masses, this one, like the one by Gabriel Fauré, sends the soul off to a better and blissful place."
