Find Your Hat
Things Learned

This is the 'Rozalia', one of the three hats that I made during Zsofia Marx's online class - Stunning Hats. This is the second, for want of a better word, 'semester' that I have studied with Zsofia. You can read my blogpost about her previous online class, HERE.

As I've mentioned in other emails, Zsofia is a generous teacher who shares both her techniques and philosophies. She is both systematic and creative in her approach. As a maker of hats and a small business owner, I find what she shares a revelation.

Interestingly, I just realized that with both classes, we had one organically-shaped, 'freeform' hat. In both semesters, we also learned how to make two hats that have strong geometry. The 'Rozalia' is in the organic-club; as is my favorite hat from her first class - this purple one.

When studying, it is wise to mimic what is being taught. It is a helpful approach when learning. But, it has limitations. With the exception of the organic-shaped hats, I cannot, in good conscience, sell the other hats. They don't look like a FeltHappiness Hat.

Hence, in the long run, I do not want to copy Zsofia's very distinctive work. Her hats are elegant, architectural, and almost minimalist. Well, you know how mine look, right? They have more surface decorations and exaggerated forms. And whimsy, too!

So, the next challenge is to adapt Zsofia's materials and methods to my own hats. With some practice, I hope to do so.

As part of last year's continuing education, I took Iryna Spasskaya's self-paced, hat class. Not surprisingly, the first hat that I made looked like a poor and boring imitation of hers. However, using her methods AND other methods that I learned via Lena Archbold's Fine Felt Scarf class, I created my Gem Collection. I can say that these hats stand on their own. They are unique and rather lovely!

Therefore, it is just going to take some time to 'marinate' Zsofia Marx's teachings to see what 'pops' out. In the meantime, you can see my Gems.
