New Policy Briefs Produced by TRANSWEL Project

The TRANSWEL Team around PL Anna Amelina has produced a number of policy briefs exploring the portability of social security rights within the European Union. The briefs analyse the regulations, practices and limitations of portability by comparing experiences of post-EU enlargement labour migration between four country pairs: Hungary–Austria, Bulgaria–Germany, Poland–UK and Estonia–Sweden. The comparative analysis of these country pairs finds the process of social security portability in the EU is clear in theory, but in practice is often complex, opaque and uncertain for both decision-makers and migrants. With the exeption of pensions, current arrangements on social security co-ordination do not support high levels of mobility in practice, especially for migrants who move between countriesmore often. The briefs can be found on the TRANSWEL website and will soon be published under welfarestatefutures.org/policy-briefs/, too.
