Joseph Colin 2019 Releases

The Genesis of This New Domaine

Joseph Colin is the second son of Marc Colin and one of four children who managed and made the wine at the Marc Colin estate from the mid-nineties until Pierre Yves, the eldest, left to set up his own sensational domaine, with the 2004 vintage. Joseph and his younger siblings, Caroline and Damien, continued to make the wine at the family estate until Joseph left to pursue his own direction with his 6 Ha share of the family’s vineyards with the 2017 vintage.
The comparison with his elder brother is irresistible.

Quality from Top to Bottom of the Range
Joseph Colin’s tiny share of the grand crus means that his Batard and Chevalier are likely to become trophies in years to come, but the real strength of his domaine is in the premier crus both in the front rank villages of Puligny and Chassagne and the increasingly important village of St. Aubin.
Below the grand crus, there are 4 super-important premier crus: Garenne in Puligny, high up the slope and known for its minerality, and three exceptional Chassagne premier crus: Caillerets and Chenevottes above the village in the prime area of Chassagne, and Vide Bourse which has the distinction of being the only premier cru, other than Puligny Pucelles, to be immediately adjacent to the grand cru, Batard Montrachet.
Below these star vineyards, the meat of the domaine, and what puts Joseph Colin into a group of exciting contemporaries, is the wealth of St. Aubin premier crus. Remilly, Clos du Meix and Chateniere are the most easily recognized but there are more than half a dozen St. Aubin 1er crus made at the domaine.  We have concentrated our efforts into the three or four best scoring wines, but all are good and distinctive.  They show why many believe that climate-change plays well into the hands of St. Aubin and that this is the village to watch.

We're pleased to offer these from the newly released 2019 vintage:

"Joseph Colin is going from strength to strength and is justly delighted with his 2019 portfolio.  'We've never had acidities like this with maturity like this,' he exclaimed, emphasizing the importance of knowing one's parcels and harvesting at the right moment in a year when sugar could accumulate precipitously.  Colin's approach, as I've written before, is to pick ripe grapes, press whole bunches and barrel down without the addition of sulfites or any settling - sulfur dioxide is added only at bottling (which takes place under Diam closures).  Wines that are more generously sulfured, he acknowledges, are more tensile and tight-knit, but the tension, he argues, comes from the sulfur, not the terroir.  And Colin is happy with what he describes as 'a certain immediacy' that comes from low-sulfur elevage, a quality that was manifest in these generous but chiseled 2019s, all of which come heartily recommended." - William Kelley, Wine Advocate
