Today we're offering an allocation of the 2020 vintage from Thomas Morey.

"The 2020 white Burgundies clearly number among the very best produced in the last two decades. Deep, concentrated and chiseled, they unite generosity of fruit and textural plenitude with structural tension and grip to compelling effect. Analytically, in pH the 2020s are very similar to the 2017s, but their acid composition is very different. Whereas 2017 had reasonably classic levels of malic acid (converted in malolactic fermentation into creamier, softer lactic acid), the 2020s had very little (generally less than two grams per liter). Instead, their balance is founded almost exclusively on firmer, stronger tartaric acid, which lends the wines a chalkier, drier profile than the creamier, rounder 2017s. This tempers the wines’ natural generosity and results in compelling white Burgundies that are built to offer long and broad drinking windows." - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

You can trace a line back through at least 10 generations of Moreys in Chassagne. Thomas is the current incarnation of the domaine that was most recently Bernard and before that Albert Morey, at least in part. It is a favorite domaine for those of us who remember white Burgundies of the old school, before the word 'minerality' acquired any meaning. Their wines were simply hedonistic and delicious in equal parts.

Thomas took on his portion of the domaine with the 06/07 vintage. He is a product of the age. As ripeness levels have risen, he has deliberately moved his wines towards a more taut and precise style, accentuating the zippy, citrus-acidity that was always a hallmark of this domaine. These wines are among the best in Chassagne and beyond.

The wines are either due to arrive by May or in stock, marked below.

Thomas Morey Chassagne Montrachet Clos St. Jean 2020
17 bottles available
$90 per bottle
ETA: April
93 points Allen Meadows, Burghound: "A markedly floral-suffused nose freely reveals its aromas of citrusy white orchard fruit, just sliced fennel and a hint of wood. The sleek and quite intense medium weight flavors exude a bracing salinity on the impressively complex and sneaky long finale. This is unusually good for CSJ, which typically makes perfectly okay whites, but rarely as distinguished as this example. (Drink starting 2027)"

Thomas Morey Chassagne Montrachet Les Chenevottes 2020
1 bottle available
$80 per bottle
ETA: March
92 points Allen Meadows, Burghound: "This too carries a deft application of wood as it frames the slightly riper aromas of pear and apple compote, floral and citrus confit. There is both excellent vibrancy and delineation to the rich and seductively textured medium weight flavors that coat the palate with dry extract while displaying fine length on the borderline tannic finish. This too could use better depth, but the underlying material appears to be present for it to develop in time. (Drink starting 2027)."

Thomas Morey Chassagne Montrachet Les Embrazees 2020
20 bottles available
$90 per bottle
ETA: March
92 points Allen Meadows, Burghound: "There is a whiff of petrol to the slightly riper and vaguely exotic aromas of white peach, lychee and citrus confit. The super-sleek, intense and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors also exude evident minerality on the sappy, sneaky long and balanced finale. Like a number of wines in the range, this isn't especially complex though I see no reason why more depth shouldn't develop if given half a chance. (Drink starting 2027)."

Thomas Morey Chassagne Montrachet Les Macherelles 2020
19 bottles available
$85 per bottle
ETA: March
91 points Allen Meadows, Burghound: "A deft touch of wood sets off the cool and pretty aromas of white flowers, pear and citrus zest, along with a hint of rosemary oil. There is once again very good punch to the delicious and attractively textured medium-bodied flavors that also exude a refreshing salinity on the lingering and balanced finale. This isn't especially refined though it stops short of rusticity and overall, this too is worthy of consideration. (Drink starting 2027)."

Thomas Morey Chassagne Montrachet Morgeot 2020
14 bottles available
$85 per bottle
ETA: March
(92-94) points Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy: "Fairendes, Petits Clos, and the upper part of Brussonnes, so basically this is an upper slope Morgeot. Pale primrose, very engaging, a wine of depth and character, lightly plummy. Delicious white fruit behind, crystalline purity and excellent length."

Thomas Morey St. Aubin Les Castets 2020
5 bottles available
$60 per bottle
In Stock
(91-93) points Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy:: "Pale primrose. The bouquet at the moment is a little less forthcoming than the village wine, beautifully balanced on the palate, ripe enough fresh white fruit, pears, chiselled limestone clarity behind, with excellent length. Keeps on coming!"

Thomas Morey St. Aubin Les Combes 2020
12 bottles available
$75 per bottle
ETA: May
92 points Allen Meadows, Burghound: "An extremely pretty, fresh and cool nose combines notes of acacia blossom, smoky mineral reduction and essence of apple and pear. The medium weight flavors are also borderline painfully intense with fine delineation on the bone-dry, lemony and chiseled finish. This would benefit from better depth but that could reasonably happen if given a few years of cellaring. (Drink starting 2027)."
