Starting off the New Year with a Bang!

Sold Out! Budding Brains Mini-Conference

Thank Yous to All

For the past two years we have hosted small, informal Community of Practice gatherings to bring together area folks using or interested in using mindfulness-based SEL. For 2019 we wanted to push ourselves to turn that small gathering into a "real event" with speakers, workshops - and of course food - and that's how the idea for our first Mini-Conference was born. As with any new venture, we weren't sure how it would turn out - would anyone come? Could we get sponsors? Would a modest fee be enough to cover our costs? were among the many questions we had leading up to Saturday. Well, YES people came, YES we got sponsors, and YES we were able to keep fees low and still cover our costs - thanks in no small part to all the hours upon hours of volunteer work that went into this event. So, without further ado here are some of our thanks:

  • Thank you to Bullfrog Bagels donating and delivering the delicious bagels!
  • Thank you to KIND Snacks for donating your healthy bars.
  • Thank you to Squeaky Pops for donating the delightful snacks.
  • Thank you to Fund for the Future of Our Children for underwriting scholarships that allowed select Title 1 schools to attend.
  • Thank you to Lisa Luo and the DCPS Team for your expertise in capturing the event on video.
  • Thank you to Dr. Elizabeth Hoffman for donating your time and sharing your wisdom with us all.
  • Thank you to Principal Liz Whisnant and Assistant Principal Armandina Macias for your excellent hosting and sharing your beautiful school.
  • Thank you to LNJ Designs Photos for your time and the beautiful photo gallery.
  • Thank you to the Peace of Mind Team and board members for your hours of help in planning and leading workshops for this conference: Janine Rudder, Liz Whisnant, Jackie Snowden, Rie Odbjserg Werner, Chapin Springer, Jillian Diesner, Linda Ryden, and Darrel Jodrey.
  • Thank you to our Peace of Mind Executive Director Cheryl Cole Dodwell for keeping us all on track, organized, and stepping in seamlessly to lead in Linda's absence.
  • And a big THANK YOU to all our attendees! We had a wonderful mix of about 70 teachers, counselors, school nurses and researchers (well above our target of 50) - all gathered to learn about how teaching mindfulness and neuroscience can support our children’s well-being.

Conference Quote

“When I see all of these educators gathered here dedicated to the social and emotional health of our kids, I feel so much hope for our schools!”

Dr. Elizabeth Hoffman's Keynote Highlights

We were thrilled to have Dr. Hoffman of the NIH join us! Her engaging talk covered why it's important to learn about the brain, and why it's important to teach children about their brains (one reason - it gives them agency.) We learned to dispel some "neuromyths" such as right brain/left brain, and that neuroplasticity ends after childhood (in fact studies show adults brains also have neuroplasticity.) We heard about our brain's Negativity Bias and how to overcome that by consciously giving attention to the positive small things in our lives. She also shared some of the latest brain research, including her own as part of the national Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. You can read more about the ABCD study here, and access Dr. Hoffman's recommended additional neuroscience resources here.
