Latest project trends from our database: October 2015

This past quarter, we saw a jump in roadways, information technology (IT) and construction projects. The power/energy and water/sanitation sectors continue to top all other sectors for development projects worldwide in our database. In the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region, while gas/oil and public sector management projects emerged as the third and fourth top sectors after power/energy and water/sanitation, diverse sectors including irrigation, social protection and transportation were evenly represented in fifth place. Below is a chart of the top sectors by region from development projects published by UN Development Business between July and September 2015.
In Review
Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
At the United Nations Private Sector Forum on 26 September, SDG Compass was launched as a tool for businesses to strategise, take action and measure around the new UN development goals. Check out this list of companies contributing to the SDGs.
Trends in Humanitarian Projects
UN Development Business participated in the 7th annual Aid & International Development Forum (AIDF) Global Disaster Relief Summit, joining representatives from NGOs, UN agencies, donors, governments, military personnel, academia and the private sector. The forum discussed humanitarian aid and trends in procurement, as well as best practices in logistics and transport, partnerships and financing.
Africa-Japan Business Investment Forum
Co-hosted in Ethiopia by our friends at African Business magazine, the forum concluded in early September with the message that Japan's growing investment and engagement in Africa will bring unique partnerships in finance, agri-business and manufacturing, among other fields.
CBW Works with Women in Business
Nominations are open until 31 October for the 2nd Commonwealth Businesswomen Awards. Our friends at the Commonwealth Businesswomen's Network (CBW) provide support for women entrepreneurs and corporate executives, through the CBW Academy, which includes modules on procurement, entrepreneurship and women on boards. Look out for their Trade Programme, which is planning trade missions to every Commonwealth member state by 2025 and encourages the development of consortia to bid for tenders.
