Monthly Message from Councilwoman Gilmore

Welcome to Summer! In District 11, the Front Door to Denver, we continue to grow and transition into a community that you can live, work, and play. Our council office has been working hard on infrastructure improvements to ensure your commute and travel through our community is safe and timely. We have some big wins to share with you:

  1. The widening of Dunkirk at 56th Avenue to complete a full intersection is complete. Sidewalks with follow as development continues;
  2. The widening of Tower between 40th and 45th is underway;
  3. Traffic signals at Andrews and Chambers and at 49th and Tower are almost complete and should be fully functional by the end of summer;

In addition, we have a brand new open space, which is the largest one in the City of Denver at 200 acres—the First Creek DEN Open Space at 56th and Buckley Road. There are pedestrian and bike trails leading from this open space that will go under both 56th Avenue and Tower Road to connect Montbello and Parkfield with Green Valley Ranch. Hop on your bike and take your families out to explore this amazing amenity, get some exercise and fresh air!
Lastly by the end of July, 61st and 60th Avenue will be paved and open at the 61st and Pena Transit Oriented development off of Tower. Construction of the canopies and solar panel over the parking lot will start in the fall.
As always customer service to you is our first priority and I look forward to seeing you at the Mayor's State of the City on July 11th at Denver International Airport and the Cabinet in the Community with Mayor Michael B. Hancock on July 23rd at Maxwell Elementary!

Have a happy and safe 4th of July long weekend!

 Exciting Community News!

Tower Road Expansion is Underway!
The Sand Creek Metropolitan District (SCMD) in concert with the City of Aurora and the City of County of Denver has started construction for the widening of Tower from 40th to 45th Avenue and expected to be complete by the end of the construction season.

First Creek at DEN Open Space
Exciting things have been happening in Northeast Denver! Recently, the Denver International Airport and the Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) have signed an interagency permit to identify 198 acres as the open space “First Creek at DEN Open Space”. DPR will maintain this property as well as protect its natural resources that includes vegetation and wildlife.

This provides an opportunity for the public to enjoy nature and recreate in the outdoors. The native prairie and large cottonwood trees of First Creek at DEN Open Space are home to a variety of wildlife including bald eagles, golden eagles, red-tailed hawks, burrowing owls, coyotes, badgers, and the largest contiguous prairie dog colony within the corporate limits of the City and County of Denver.
There are a variety of projects that DPR staff are working on to improve and enhance this property including formalizing the parking area by installing a surrounding fence; creating trail access to the old Buckley Road for visitors to walk or ride their bikes on, noxious weed management, removing old wire fence line along Buckley Road, installing the First Creek Regional trail, trash pickup, installing interpretive signage, and planting native shrubs at the trailhead.

Future projects include formalizing trail access to First Creek from the parking lot north of 56th Ave, and partnering with the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge (RMANWR) to submit proposals for the funding of additional access points into the Refuge.
DPR Parks Regulations will apply to the First Creek at DEN Open Space and a sign has been posting notifying visitors of the Open Space Rules. The First Creek at DEN Open Space is located between the RMANWR and Peña Boulevard, north of 56th Avenue in Denver. Please come out and visit the newest and largest open space in the City and County of Denver!
