Call for Easter Lilies
You can help with our Easter Worship Celebration. If you have lilies for Easter, please bring them to the church to help decorate our Sanctuary for Easter.

Congratulations Jeff & Carolyn Dawson!

On February 27th, they completed the Basic Lay Servant class and became our newest Local Lay Servants (formerly Lay Speaker). We are so proud of them and ALL our Lay Servants. Joseph UMC is very blessed to have so many people willing to serve in this role.

Our Virtual Free Store

You may have noticed a small table in the Fellowship area at the church with a poster and a few items. The idea of a FREE STORE came from a Mission Moment that David Cook presented a number of weeks ago. Items donated to the “Store” are free of charge. If you wish to make a donation all proceeds will be used to benefit the missions of the church.  Also, if you have items to donate to the store your donations are tax deductible. At this time small items can be left on the table. If you have larger items to donate, would like more information or are interested in helping with the store you can contact Linda Eytchison at 541-263-0990.

United Methodist Women Meet Thursday, March 17th

The program theme is "Are You Ready for Easter, but as it is on March 17th, there might be a little bit about St. Patrick's Day, too. Hope to see you there!

All women of the church are encouraged to be apart of United Methodist Women. The group meets on the third Thursday of every month except July and August. Our next meeting is Thursday, March 17 at 1:00 pm.

UMCOR-West Mission Team 2016!
2015 in Review

In February, the Single Board Governance Team (SBG) had a workshop to review 2015 and make some goals for 2016. This is what we found.

2015 was a busy year of transition and building at JUMC. Some of the many happenings included a new pastor, Cherie Johnson, beginning July 1. As part of the transition, the parsonage--which had been rented for six years--received a major update in preparation for our new pastor to move in.  Much of the work was done by volunteers.

JUMC also approved construction of a new fellowship building, located just south of the existing church building. As part of this project, a major, successful, capital fundraising campaign was conducted. Generous donations of over $240,000 were received in 2015 and donations continue to come in. A contractor was hired and construction began. The project has been kept on track through significant gifts of volunteer time and labor.
Improvements to the existing church building and sanctuary were also begun by removing walls in fellowship area to create space and light.
Simultaneous with the transitions and building construction, successful existing ministries continued to bless our community and world.
  • The Magic Garden again provided a ton—literally--of good, wholesome, organic food to our local community. Many volunteers, plus one part-time paid staff, make this happen.
  • As a fund raising event for the Magic Garden, JUMC ran the community “Good Book” sale in conjunction with UMW bazaar in October.
  • The Tiny Little Church small groups continue to meet and provide opportunity for bible study and fellowship.
  • Members of JUMC and helpers from the community ran the 3rd annual Children’s Store in early December. Many local children are able to buy a gift for 25 cents each and learn the value of giving through this crazy, fun event. Over 1,000 gifts were chosen, wrapped, and sent home with children to share with family and friends on Christmas.
  • The UMW bazaar brought many community members to the church to purchase handmade items, along with cinnamon rolls, pies, and a soup lunch!
  • For the third year, JUMC sent a volunteer team to UMCOR Depot West in Salt Lake City where the team spent a week supporting the activities of the United Methodist Committee on Relief.

To start us off for 2016 we set some short-term six month goals. More long range goals will be set at a planning workshop during the summer.
  • Finish the new building, including a community celebration and consecration ceremony
  • Explore and communicate more information about our Free Store. [See Free Store article in the newsletter for more information.]
  • Expand Christian education opportunities with at least two new offerings.

We are going in an exciting direction as we move to building infrastructure to being able to implement our dreams for ministry and outreach in Joseph and Wallowa County!

Your SBG Team!
Wondering whether Pastor Cherie is in at the church, but don't see her car? See our newly installed sign made by Bill Kost and installed by Jeff Dawson. Now, Cherie will be able to walk to the church and let people know she's there. Thanks so much to Bill & Jeff!
