Coaching Tip of the Week

Coaching Tip of the Week!

September 28, 2015

As coaches, we all know it can be hard to allow the players to make their own decisions more frequently in games.  We feel the urge to help them see their options by commenting too often.  Particularly, when we have worked all week on something specific and it just isn’t happening in the game.  Or, if it continues to be a source of frustration for us that the kids just aren’t getting it.  We have to resist that urge to “over coach”.  If you accentuate the positive with comments about the things they have done right and minimize the comments that tell them what decisions to make, you will find the players learn what you want from them much quicker.  Pick a game out in the coming weeks and force yourself to comment only on the positive things you see.  Give the game back to the kids and be objective about their play.  I think you will find that the things you have taught them will happen more often if you take that approach.  Review the game plan at halftime and see if they absorb the information better by using this coaching tactic.
