From The Commodore

Hi Everyone,
I would like to share with you my welcome address at last weeks Business Lunch.  We had a wonderful mix of members and the local business community present to hear Mal Harts boat building career.
"I  would  like  to  welcome  you  all  to  the  Harbour  View
Room  at  Mornington   Yacht  Club  - which  is arguably  one  of  the  best  views  on  Port  Phillip  Bay.

Like  most  clubs  these  days  we  have  to  work  very  hard  to  keep  Mornington  Yacht  Club  on  course. Fortunately  we  have  a  number  of  enthusiastic,  dedicated, experienced  and  talented  members  to keep the  club  focused  on  sailing  activities,  financial  stability  and  growing our membership.  These members  are  very  well  supported  by  a  small,  very  professional  team  in our  office.
We  have  been  working  very  hard  to  grow  our  membership  numbers  across  all  categories  to  the  present  level  of  834,  the  highest  it  has  been  for  several  years. This result is extremely pleasing in the current climate as it strengthens our core foundation.
This  summer  season  a  number  of  our members  from Junior  to  Senior  have  enjoyed success   on  the water  at  various  regattas.  We would like to acknowledge the following members:

  • Sophie Ciszek - 2016  Australian Sailing Victorian  Woman Sailor of the Year

  • Rhett Gowans - 2017 Australian Laser Radial Champion

  • Graeme Taylor “GT” – 2017 Australian Etchells  Champion.

We would also like to thank Taryn Taylor “TJ” and her business partner Colin Hyett from Colin Hyett Design for the sensational dressing of our room today, TJ never fails to impress us with her skills at making our club look spectacular.

This  year Mornington  Yacht  Club  was  the  first  Victorian  Club  to  trial  a  new program with Aquatics Recreation Victoria combining Learn to Swim “Vicswim” with learn to Sail “Tackers”  for Juniors 8-12 years of age. It was a great success in terms of skills and confidence on the water and we are pleased that the joint program will continue again next year.
This season we have seen 800 School aged children experience sailing and boating at Mornington through our Sail Training programs led by Michelle Pickford and a further 300 through our Sailability program led by Graeme Lyell and Noel Heyes.
We  value  very  much  the  relationship  we  have  with  our two  key  stakeholders; the  Mornington Peninsula  Shire  and  Parks  Victoria.
In the room today we have our State MP – Honorable David Morris,  Councillor Rosie Clarke,  the Shire Council CEO Carl Cowie and Parks Victoria Chief Ranger Graeme Davis.
We  also  value  the  great  support  we  get  from  all  our Sponsors. Those prsesent are Ian Ross – Audi Mornington, Paul Gray - FIIG Securities, David Anderson – CBA,  Kirsty Hellings and Kelly Beck of Marshalls & Dent Lawyers, Rob De Santis – The Rocks , Rob Guerrini - Scotchmans Hill and  we  do  encourage  our  members  to support our  sponsors wherever possible.
Our food today is from the award winning Rocks Restaurant and fine wines from our sponsor Scotchmans Hill from the Bellarine Peninsula, so a huge thank you to both.
Please  enjoy  your  lunch  and also Mal  Harts  journey  from his early boat building days to  where  he  is today.
Thank you.

See you at the club soon, Sheryl Schumacher
