MINISTRY FORMATION CONFERENCE – Saturday, September 17, 2016
Did you know that people are more engaged in ministry within their parish when they feel that their talents are being appreciated, developed, and utilized? This year’s MFC-2016: Disciples of Mercy is a great way to encourage and grow your parish ministry personnel on every level (e.g. volunteer or professional, lay or ordained) and across all areas of outreach (e.g. with catechists, liturgical ministers, pastoral care volunteers, clergy, lay ecclesial ministers, Catholic school teachers, etc.). Make sure you do your part to invite and support as many people as possible in attending this year’s conference with Bishop John Noonan and our keynote presenter, Dr. Hosffman Ospino, PhD. Your investment will seed an abundant harvest in your parish – GUARANTEED!!!... Here are the links:
CATECHETICAL SUNDAY – Sunday, September 18, 2016
Recognition is important among ministers but it is often minimized. Many of us are motivated by service to others; we are not seeking accolades or acknowledgements. However, Catechetical Sunday 2016 is a great way to publicize appreciation and to pray for those in ministry – especially those who serve as catechists. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has developed materials to assist parishes in the awareness, celebration, and formation with regard to this annually designated thematic-Sunday. Here is the link to numerous materials and resources (e.g. prayer cards, articles and journals, a commissioning service, etc.): http://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/how-we-teach/catechesis/catechetical-sunday/

AMORIS LAETITIA, CHAPTER 6, PREPARING ENGAGED COUPLES FOR MARRIAGE
We are going to spend the next several weeks looking at this section of Amoris Laetitia. We as Church are being called to search for and examine optimal methods of forming and preparing engaged couples for the celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage.
Pope Francis begins this section by writing, “The Synod Fathers stated in a number of ways that we need to help young people discover the dignity and beauty of marriage.1 They should be helped to perceive the attraction of a complete union that elevates and perfects the social dimension of existence, gives sexuality its deepest meaning, and benefits children by offering them the best context for their growth and development.”
“The complexity of today’s society and the challenges faced by the family require a greater effort on the part of the whole Christian community in preparing those who are about to be married. The importance of the virtues needs to be included. Among these, chastity proves invaluable for the genuine growth of love between persons. In this regard, the Synod Fathers agreed on the need to involve the entire community more extensively by stressing the witness of families themselves and by grounding marriage preparation in the process of Christian initiation by bringing out the connection between marriage, baptism and the other sacraments. The Fathers also spoke of the need for specific programs of marriage preparation aimed at giving couples a genuine experience of participation in ecclesial life and a complete introduction to various aspects of family life.”2
Pope Francis and the Synod Fathers envision the process of preparing couples for sacramental marriage to be similar to the catechumenate. The process would take place in the parish with guides to provide church teaching and practical information for living married life. Engaged couples would have a sponsor or mentor couple to accompany them on the journey to and beyond the wedding day. And all of the married couples of the parish can be examples of living out the vocation of marriage.
Next week: Continuation of preparing Engaged Couples for Marriage
