The Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies went through a strategic planning period led by the Director of the Centre, Prof Sampson Mamphweli, between July and November 2017. The process culminated in the development of a five years plan for the Centre titled “Strategic Development Plan for the Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies, 2018-2022”.
The document defines the vision and mission for the Centre, the Centre’s priorities and goals, the areas of business, the scope of work and key performance areas as well as the governance systems amongst other aspects. The key aspects of the strategy have to do with the network of collaborations that will be established between 2018 and 2022, which will include local, regional and international networks of research institutions. This network will share resources including human resources and state-of-the-art equipment available within the network.
The Centre strives to coordinate cutting-edge research activities in renewable and sustainable energy studies. The Centre also added Power Systems Studies as part of the research areas, and currently there is a Research Chair in Power Systems Studies located within the Centre to facilitate and coordinate national and international research in power systems studies. The Research Chair is funded through Eskom. According to the published strategy document, the Centre will continue to support the South African National government initiatives that have to do with renewable and sustainable energy, as well as power systems studies.
