As many restaurant chains report lower second-quarter earnings compared to last year, one expert thinks a “restaurant recession” is coming. Paul Westra, an analyst with Stifel Financial Corp., told Bloomberg.com that decreased sales may even signal trouble for the U.S. economy as a whole, with a nationwide recession coming as early as 2017. But analyst Michael Halen says there’s a bright spot in all of this gathering darkness: Pizza restaurants can thrive in a downturn if, like the megachains, they focus on their strong value proposition.

Promoting a Wine of the Month

Marketing guru Tom Feltenstein has an idea to demystify wine for customers while boosting wine sales and incentivizing servers. Feature a new wine each month, with a bottle placed at every table, along with a table tent or card explaining the wine’s traits, qualities and origin. Additionally, create a “Sommelier in Training” promotion to encourage your servers to push the featured wine throughout the month to win a prize. Advertise the promotion on social media, and keep it going as long as it makes a profit!

Pizza Hut India Creates Genius Promo
Around Olympics

Pizza Hut India celebrated the success of two female Olympic medalists—PV Sindhu, a silver medalist in badminton, and Sakshi Malik, who won the bronze in wrestling—in a promo that earned headlines around the world. In separate promos, the chain offered free pizzas to customers named Sindhu and Sakshi, and hundreds of women redeemed the offer. A Pizza Hut exec said the promo was “a small token of our appreciation for the Indian Olympians who have won medals at Rio,” but it was also a great way to demonstrate the company’s support for female athletes.
