JOMO - Joy of Missing Out

noun (joh-moh) slang:

a feeling of contentment with one’s own pursuits and activities, without worrying over the possibility of missing out on what others may be doing.

This word of the day popped up on one of my social media feeds at the beginning of May.  In the midst of end-of-year celebrations, switching sports seasons, finalizing details for all of our summer events, trips, and vacations. Between planning, packing, and other preparations these four letters perplexed me. I had to stop what I was doing and rethink how I was going to approach this critical season of ministry. I didn’t even need to read the rest of the definitions, I knew that I needed to adopt this philosophy for the wellbeing of my ministry and personal mindset.

A few years ago, our student ministries team adopted the summer phrase of FOMO, or the Fear Of Missing Out.  We tried to create an atmosphere and cultivate a mindset that students would not want to miss ANYTHING on our summer calendar, for fear that they are missing out on something. Each lunch, all of our mission trips, Bible Study, every single social media post, was meticulously crafted and refined to portray an apprehension that this one item was the crux of their summer.

I am so grateful for grace and that God works beyond us!!!

Fun Fact: When website designers want to track how effective their design is there are two means of determining success.  They look for JOMO when the browser spends a significant amount of time on the site and gets deep into all the pages after the landing page.  The FOMO browsers are tracked through a “call to action” button, one they click to get a free book or coupons in an email.

So what’s our “call to action?”

What if it’s….inaction? What if it’s restful contentment with one’s own life instead of restless wandering through the social media lives of others? What if it’s focusing on the presence of God instead of thinking about the absence of others? What if it is simply sitting with a student, instead of rushing to turn in receipts? What if it starts feeling less and less like missing out, and more and more like jumping into a joyous life with our Creator?
