Owls of New England and Beyond
Everyone loves owls, yet how often do you get to see a live owl up close?

Bring the family to meet some fascinating owls you may hear or see in Westborough, as well as some impressive owls from around the world on Saturday, March 18 at WCLT’s popular live animal program, this year featuring “Eyes on Owls” by Marcia and Mark Wilson of Dunstable, MA. There will be two hour-long shows – at 9:00 am and 11:00 am. Come to the Knights of Columbus Hall, 17 Willow St., Westborough. There is no charge for admission.

Learn to identify, respect, and protect these handsome creatures, and get some hooting lessons while you’re at it! Among the owls likely to be presented are New England’s tiniest owl, the northern saw-whet owl, and the world’s largest owl, the Eurasian eagle owl.

Plan to arrive early as seating is limited. Park in the lot behind the K of C hall or in the overflow parking in Arturo’s parking lot, 54 East Main St. (and walk around behind the Arturo’s building to cross directly into the K of C parking lot). Parking is not allowed along Willow Street.

WCLT’s live animal program is supported in part by a grant from the Westborough Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. The program is also supported in part by Westborough Newcomers Club.

Celebrate WCLT's 20th Birthday!
Let’s gather to celebrate WCLT’s 20th birthday! Festivities will take place Sunday, April 9, 4:00 - 7:00 pm at Arturo’s Restaurant. We’ll celebrate what WCLT has accomplished from 1997-2017 and launch into the next 20 years and beyond. Members, friends, nonmembers – all are welcome!  You can look forward to a special appetizer menu by Arturo’s, wine tastings by Julio’s Liquors, door prizes, and good company!
Enjoy live music by singer-songwriter Luanne Crosby, who will debut a special song that she wrote for WCLT’s 20 birthday. Luanne accompanies herself on ukulele and guitar and performs in a wide array of styles from Motown to musicals, from blues to folk, from country to jazz to rock.
Tickets are $40 per person. A souvenir WCLT wine glass comes with your ticket purchase, courtesy of the WCLT Board of Directors.

Purchase your tickets ONLINE or contact Gillian by email or call; 614-668-0485. WCLT will mail tickets and have a list of names at the door. For questions, contact events@westboroughlandtrust.org
Snow recedes, litter gets uncovered, and on Saturday, April 22 the time comes for us to turn out for WCLT’s annual town-wide clean-up – now new and improved!  How so?  In three ways:
  • Online sign-up is now available (not required) at westboroughlandtrust.org/earth-day-signup;
  •  Bay State Commons Green is the new,  central meeting location;
  •  A free noon-time picnic lunch will be provided to clean-up volunteers at the Bay State Commons Green gazebo, with pizza, healthy side dishes, beverages, and dessert courtesy of Arturo’s Ristorante, Dunkin’ Donuts on Route 9, Roche Bros., and both Westborough Stop & Shop stores.
As in the past, volunteers will get a certificate for a free bouquet of flowers courtesy of Mugford’s Flower Shoppe.

Meeting times (rain or shine) are similar to those in past years:
  • 6:30 am - Early birds meet at West Meadow Plaza (Rt. 9/135, adjacent to JP’s, Papa Gino’s) or Bellows Road and Rt. 9/30 (behind St. Mary’s Credit Union). No sign-up needed for early birds.
  • 9:30 am - Families are invited at our NEW LOCATION on the Bay State Commons Green.
  • To choose your cleanup location in advance, sign up online at westboroughlandtrust.org/earth-day-signup.  Select from more than 40 locations! Online sign-up will close at 6 pm, Thursday, April 20.
Come on your own, or rally your family, friends, co-workers, or neighbors to form a team to beautify our town!

For the cleanup, wear gloves, long pants, long sleeves, and sturdy shoes. Trash bags and rubber gloves will be provided.

Would you like to suggest sites in town in need of clean-up? Do you have questions? Please contact Bruce Tretter at 508-446-7790 or earthday@westboroughlandtrust.org.

Stewardship Notes
Malley Trail Upgrade Continues
Stewardship Committee chair Marge Fisher reports that Stewardship will continue working to upgrade the Malley Trail between the Mill Road boat ramp and the new bridge (informally known as the Orlando bridge) installed last summer. Possible relocation of some trail sections to drier ground and replacement of a number of very old bog bridges are on tap for this spring/summer season.

Eagle Scout candidates will also be on the trails rebuilding other bridges. Some of our Girl Scouts are likely to contribute through Silver and Gold Award projects.
