Hello friends.
Greetings from New Delhi. Here are a few reads that I thought were worth sharing this week-
🏅 The prize is 1.3 billion customers. How Amazon is battling Walmart in India. “Think like cowboys, who are wild and fast and a little bit rude, and not like computer scientists” -Bezos
⛑ Your next doctor’s appointment might be with an AI. A new wave of chatbots are replacing physicians and providing frontline medical advice—but are they as good as the real thing?
🕶 China is the world’s retail laboratory. Companies are testing a range of concepts, from facial-recognition payment systems to fully automated convenience stores.
📉 Nothing lasts forever, not even the mighty Sears. When business school professors or journalists would ask Sears executives which competitor they most feared, the answer that invariably came back was: nobody.
💲 The most lucrative side-hustles. Who are the so-called “side-hustlers?” What do they do? And how much do they make? The Hustle ran a survey to find out.
🤖 How your life’s data means a version of you could live forever. Digital immortality—your family and friends will be able to interact with a digital “you” that doles out advice—even when you’re gone.
💰 The In-N-Out burger billionaire. With a net worth of $3 billion, she’s the sole owner of burger empire In-N-Out. Snyder’s past lies in stark contrast to the company’s long-standing stability — she never graduated from college, battled through drug use, and went through three divorces.
💄 The high-tech athleisure empire. This company has a “sensory immersion lab,” which develops technology that identifies and measures each person’s unique pattern of movement. Why? Because even your leggings are personalized in 2018.
⛓ Future-proofing the internet. Quantum computers will break the encryption that protects the internet and fixing things will be tricky.
👨‍💻 Instagram's harassment problem. The platform has cast itself as the internet’s kindest place. But users argue harassment is rampant, and employees say efforts to stem it aren’t funded well or prioritized.
