MP supports Standing Up 4 Sitting Down campaign
Epping Forest MP Eleanor Laing is supporting a new national initiative aiming to improve peoples' access to their local shops and high street by increasing the amount of seating available to those who need it.
Many people struggle to access their local shops and leisure facilities because of a lack of seating areas to rest.
The Standing Up 4 Sitting Down campaign is calling on retailers and high streets to do their bit to improve the lives of people by providing adequate seating in stores and public spaces.
With more seating and resting areas on offer visiting local shops need not be such a struggle.
Shopping gives people, particularly those living alone, important social contact, reducing loneliness.
It also offers more opportunities for physical exercise enjoying the outdoors and meeting up with friends.
For shops and retail spaces, welcoming more people increases footfall and ultimately the opportunity for profit.
Mrs Laing said: “I remember how hard it was taking my own mother out shopping when she was in her later years. I know this simple campaign can make a real difference to people, especially older people, when they are out and about.”
Mrs Laing added: “I am pleased that so many of our shopping areas have really good seating outside and that many businesses in the Epping Forest area already provide seating so I hope that this campaign will encourage others to think about the benefits seating can bring to our community.”
