CityKidz - A Place to Belong

by Wendy Turpin

Last Season we began something new at the Playhouse.   A Safe Zone.  It’s still in pilot project mode, but as we tweak and improve, it is providing a safe place for kids to go when our CityKidz are feeling troubled.  We have all kinds of kids that come to us each Saturday.  Some have anxiety, some are missing their father or mother, some are dealing with bullies at school and the list goes on.  It is our intention to make the Safe Zone a place for kids to go for support and not punishment.  A place to just be who they are feeling at that moment.

The benefit of it was immediately evident when a young boy was so sad and in distress that he couldn’t properly participate in the fun and games happening out front.  He went back to the Safe Zone, supervised by a trained volunteer, and wept uncontrollably.  He was missing his dad who he hadn’t seen since he was just a toddler.  One of the other kids that was already there was moved with compassion for this boy and reached out to hug and comfort him saying, “”It’s okay, I miss my Dad too, he left me a long time ago too.”  Brothers in arms --- comforting one another in an understood pain that neither of them should be feeling at their age.  After letting go of their concerns and now filled with a fresh peace, both boys returned to the audience and participated fully in the program and had great fun --- burdens lifted.

CityKidz Ottawa is a lot of things to people.  It’s an outreach, a training ground, a fun place, a place to get rid of your worries, a place to learn about God.   For these boys  -- this day -- it was a safe place to be.  A place to know that you belong no matter what you’re feeling.  A place to learn and practice compassion.

Gift of Christmas

Every year we give the Gif of Christmas to our kids.  In Ottawa, this looks like a toy drive, with over 100 toys donated, and a big Christmas party.    We are very grateful to all the people and businesses that made this party a major success with our first turkey dinner and entertainment provided by Jerry and Bonnie Wallace of Wallace Ministries.  Jerry and Bonnie provided fun entertainment teaching the kids the true meaning of Christmas. Gen and Chris Blenkiron of Remax Core Excellence and Janette and Bob Ryan, former cooks at the National House of Prayer, headed up a team of volunteers to cook our turkey dinner and create a wonderful banquet atmosphere for the children.  Also visiting was Cherylin Perkins who jumped around on a pair of spring boots and the kids loved her!  The kids had a chance  to try them out for themselves.  Santa was there too, whose trip down from the North Pole was sponsored by Liberty Tax on Montreal Road. Not forgetting all of our program volunteers who bused, and supervised the kids during this fun time!  Last but not least, we were able to raise almost $2,000 in our Gift of Christmas campaign through private donations --- all of which went directly into Christmas Party expenses.   It was a great time and the kids had a blast!  They look forward to the party every year and love it when they can finally attend.  Thank you to everyone involved!   (click on the pictures and it will take you to their website for more information about them)

The Donors

The Kids

Besides all the fun described above, we also had a "Kindness Passport" at the Christmas Party.  Children were given a few acts of kindness to perform, such as let someone go in front of you in line, ask someone how you can help, and have each performance signed off by a volunteer.  The kids grabbed a hold of this and it was fun to watch them being kind to one another.  One boy was intrigued by what his reward would be and asked, "So what is the prize?".  The volunteer answered, "You get a good feeling in your heart!"  He accepted this and went on with the party.  Later he came to the same volunteer and proudly declared, "I've completed all the tasks!  Now I have A REALLY GOOD FEELING!"  Haha!  We really have some great kids at CityKidz!

Fall Update

We had a great season at the Playhouse last fall.   We were able to bring in special guests Jerry and Bonnie Wallace to give us a start, and held 7 more successful Playhouses until our Christmas Party in December.  We were averaging around 60 kids each Playhouse and had a total of 109 registered with us.  All loved and cared for by our amazing program volunteer team.

Our CityYouth program for 12-15 year old's also gained a great deal of momentum as well.  We've begun holding this special time with our youth after school on Wednesdays and are covering age appropriate topics filled with faith, hope and love, to inspire our youth to become the best leaders they can be.

Our CityKidz Big Dream Banquet and Silent Auction was an amazing success as well, raising $7,000 for us (after expenses) and creating a lot of brand new friendships.

Home visits were conducted all season long and children regularly received encouragement at their door by our trusty volunteers, who love these kids immensely!

In short, it was a fun season and we're feeling it was pretty successful on all fronts!  Bring on the Spring Season!!
