 SPRING CLASSES

Basic Fruit Tree Pruning Seminar
Sat. March 25  1-3 PM
Do you have fruit trees in your yard, but are not sure where to start when it comes to pruning them? You are not alone! Come out to Bakers’ Acres and join Jim Eve from Eve’s Farm Service as he describes the basics of pruning fruit trees. Jim is Bakers’ Acres scout for our orchard and is helping us to use less chemicals through IPM Techniques.
The seminar will cover the purpose of pruning and the fundamentals of fruit tree growth and fruit production. He will also coach you on how to decide what cuts to make and how much to take off of the tree. Dress warmly because we will be going outside after the class session to try your newly learned skills. The class will be held at the Baker’s Acres classroom and out in the orchard. This is a class you can take over and over and still learn more.

Getting Started with Vegetable Gardening
April 22 10 - 11:30 AM

We have decided to offer a new class here at Bakers’ Acres. So many of you are starting to grow your own fruits and vegetables and are asking us a lot of good questions. So we called the leaders in this area, Cooperative Extension, and asked it they could help us out with this new endeavor. This class will help the beginning veggie gardener learn about garden siting, soil preparation, seed starting, transplanting, mulching, container gardening, and easy veggies to try first.  Tomato issues such as late blight resistant varieties and determinate versus indeterminate will be covered as well. Class will be taught by Pat Curran from Cooperative Extension.

Cost $10 Deadline for registration is Wed. April 19th. Call 607-533-4653 to register.

Flowers, Trees & Wild Bees Workshop
  April 29   10 - 12PM
Did you know that over 400 species of wild bees live in New York State? Beyond honey bees, many of these wild bees are important pollinators for orchard crops and other beloved fruits and vegetables. And, they visit wildflowers too! When crops aren't blooming, wild bees rely on blooming trees, shrubs, and wildflowers for crucial food resources for their offspring. For many years Cornell students have studied the wild bees in our orchards. This year we have asked them to hold a workshop to teach about the different kinds of wild bees and how they impact our orchards pollination. We are holding the class during apple bloom so that there will be the opportunity to walk through the orchards and point out the different types of native bees .Come join this spring orchard walk with members of Cornell University's Wild Bee Team from Dr. Bryan Danforth's laboratory. We will learn about the incredible diversity of wild bees, how they live and their preferred floral hosts.
The date of this workshop may change according to the bloom timing.
Call 607-533-4653 for registration and we will call you with any updates and changes.
Cost $10   Deadline for Registration is Wed. April 26th. Call 607-533-4653
