March Updates from Surrey Scouts

Following our major mailing list update last month, we had 150 email bounces which meant that Surrey+ was not delivered.  This will have removed those people from our mailing list.  Please ensure that all of the leaders in your group, including exec members, are receiving Surrey+, especially if they have changed their email address or are new leaders.  Anyone attending the ACC recently will need to subscribe after they have been appointed.  People can subscribe on the front page of the Surrey Scouts website and they will then get the next issue when it is sent.

Don't forget to send your stories and pictures to news@surrey-scouts.org.uk so we can share them.  A picture (or 2!) and a paragraph will do to share your good news.

Godalming Cubs Scout Celebrate at Charterhouse

Charterhouse celebrated the 160th anniversary of the birth of their famous former pupil by inviting local Cub Scouts from Saints Peter and Paul Scout Group, Godalming to a party. This was actually a double celebration for SSPP, as Wednesday 22 February was also the 96th anniversary of the founding of the Scout Group.  Cubs were met by pupils from the School’s Combined Cadet Force, who helped them learn about Baden-Powell’s life and also helped them to explore the CCF Armoury building.

Catherine Smith, Charterhouse Archivist, welcomed the Cubs, and explained that BP considered that his time at Charterhouse gave him his core skills that later became part of Scouting, as he spent quite a lot of his time in the school grounds watching birds, catching rabbits and climbing trees to hide from teachers!

Apart from a quiz, and other activities, the Cubs enjoyed a 160th Birthday cake, which was cut by Tom, the oldest Cub, along with George, the youngest Cub, helped by Ken Willard, a long-standing leader with SSPP. Towards the end of the evening, two Beavers, George and Wilf, were invested as Cubs in front of the Mafeking Field Gun, which was used by BP during the Boer War.

Media Updates

If you have not had a chance yet, please look at the content of the media updates email sent recently.  Thank you for the offers of help so far - we are still looking for someone with design skills working with Adobe products.

There was also a key message about photo use.
Just a reminder - If you or any of your leaders change email address, please:
1 - update your profile on Surrey+ - there is a link at the bottom of the email.
2 - update your record on Compass.

COUNTY INFORMATION DESK

 Updates for the Directory:

The email address for Mike Taylor should be jandm0708@hotmail.co.uk. There was an extra “d” in the directory - apologies.

I plan to issue version 2 of the County Directory in early April; if you know of any errors or names missing, please let me know. For this issue I am not writing to all Districts and others; just what I have received to date.

If you weren’t aware the single-colour purple logo is now the primary logo for UK Scouting so please ensure any two colour green and purple logos are updated.

A personalised version for Groups, Districts and Counties is available free of charge on the Print Centre. Only use the fleur de lis when space is an issue, such as on a badge design

Fish out your old £1 coins and use them; by October they will be worthless! (New coins coming in March)

On the same lines, postage stamps go up in price on 27th March; buy yours before this to save some money (a Treasurer speaking!)

For more information on any of the above, contact direct or call Peter Hoare through the County Office, at home on 01883 342868 or on e-mail – peter@hoare15.freeserve.co.uk

Woking Cub Science day 28/01/2017

93 Cubs, 10 science bases, loads of adults and a large flask of liquid nitrogen (-197c) made Woking’s Science day the coolest ever.

Scouting science, living and physical science formed the themes for the bases plus a team from Air Products who demonstrated the effects of cooling different materials to -197c, bananas became hammers blu tack became nails to be hammered in to lumps of wood. The bunch of flowers presented to me at the end shattered into dust.

There were other demonstrations to amaze the Cubs. Jet propelled bottle rockets, exploding cans and gravity defying gyroscopes.

An awesome day!
