Welcome, Amy Hoffman!
We are delighted to announce that Amy Hoffman has joined the Oregon Coast STEM Hub as its South Coast Program Coordinator. Amy has a background in natural resources and science education, and prior to joining our team she was an Outdoor School Regional Coordinator with OSU Extension.

Amy is based in Coos Bay, and she will be working closely with our partners in Curry, Coos, and western Douglas Counties to support STEM education.  Meet our Team

Manufacturing Tour in Coquille
Oct 19 and 20 in Coquille

Career-Connected Learning: The Roseburg Forest Products plant in Coquille is offering tours for local students on October 19 and 20 through a partnership with Douglas County Partners for Student Success. The Oregon Coast STEM Hub is able to support students from Coquille, Myrtle Point, Bandon, Coos Bay, North Bend, and Powers to participate. Teachers, find out how to schedule a tour for one of these days.

Room to Read: STEAM Powered Careers
Resources for students in Grades 1-3

Room to Read offers free online resources highlighting BIPOC authors and STEM professionals. Explore 10 STEAM-themed books that inspire early elementary students about a variety of groundbreaking and exciting STEAM careers. Hands-on activities can be done at home or at school, lessons are available in English and Spanish, and short video episodes are also hosted on the website. These materials are available digitally without cost. Learn more

Play The Watershed Game

Informal educators, come play The Watershed Game, an in-person, hands-on simulation which helps participants learn how land use affects water quality and natural resources. Brainstorm how you might use this outreach tool with audiences in grade 6 and up. Learn more
Exploring Project Learning Tree with Tribal Partners

K-8 educators, join this Oregon Natural Resources Education Program workshop to explore PLT activities that have been newly-modified by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde to reflect their culture and place-based Indigenous Knowledge. PDUs available. Learn more
Early Learning STEM workshops
Nov 19 at 9-11AM & 12-3PM in Newport
PreK educators, register for two workshops designed just for you. The morning topic is Playful Math for Early Learners, and the afternoon is Using BeeBots with Early Learners. Attend both workshops to obtain lunch and a free BeeBot programmable robot! Learn more
ROV Building Workshop for Educators
Dec 10 at 9AM - 4PM in Newport
Grade 6-12 educators will learn how to build a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and learn how to get their students involved in building underwater robots and competing in the MATE ROV Competition. Stipend and ROV included. Learn more
High School Science Educators

HS Science for All

Portland Metro STEM Partnership is holding a number of virtual trainings for the High School Science for All aka "Patterns" courses (Physics, Chemistry, Biology). Thanks to a STEM Innovation Grant from the Oregon Department of Education, they are able to pay each Oregon high school science teacher participant $50/hour to attend sessions. Sessions are offered October through January.

Funds to Support STEM Learning
Educators, are you look for funds to help you implement STEM learning experiences with your students? Check the Funding Sources page on the Oregon Coast STEM Hub Website.

FOR EXAMPLE: The deadline to apply for the Celia B. Godsil Grants in Place Fellows program is Oct 14. This grant provides up to $2500 for projects that engage rural students in place-based learning.
Teachers On The Estuary: Earlier this month, Oregon educators learned about preparing for climate change impacts through stewardship during a 3-day workshop at South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve in Charleston.

State of the Coast 2022

November 5 in Newport
The State of the Coast conference is a chance to have fun and learn while listening to informative talks on current marine science and policy issues, participate in hands-on activities, and network with research, industry, and community leaders. This is Oregon’s coastal conference for everyone! Cost $40 adults / $25 students Learn more
