*Are you an in-school or out-of-school educator working with coastal K-12 youth?
*Do you need help integrating computer science (CS) into your curriculum?
*Do you work with underrepresented or marginalized youth who may not have access to Computer Science through STEM education?

The Oregon Coast STEM Hub has funding from the Oregon Department of Education to support our coastal districts and partners to purchase Computer Science equipment and project funding.

KidWind Wind Energy Workshop
Jan 5th online 4-6PM

Get ready for the March 21st Renewable Energy Challenge! Oregon Coast educators are invited to join a virtual workshop to learn how to explore the science of wind power with students. Learn about the science and technology of wind turbines and blade design and engage students in dynamic, hands-on energy-based learning. Playful Math and Beebot Workshop
Feb 4th 9AM - 3PM in Bandon

This workshop will engage early learner educators in playful math and demonstrate ways to create a playful math learning environment in your program. Participants will also learn how to introduce technology and robotics into their program using Beebots. Attend the whole day to receive lunch and a free Beebot. Learn more
Design Thinking for STEM Equity
Feb 16- April 25th

A guided facilitation and professional learning opportunity to tackle inequities in STEM education. Design ways to empower student voice within our STEM curricula and community. Learn more
Diack Workshop for Educators
Feb 18-20th in Charleston

This three day workshop will provide hands-on opportunities in the field as well as classroom time to develop curriculum tools and strategies that promote student-driven field-based science inquiry projects from K-12th grade. Attending teachers can also apply for a $2,000 -$6,000 grant from the Diack Ecology Education Program. Lodging and meals provided. Learn more
Mathways +1 Financial Algebra
Observe this course in action 

As part of the Oregon Math Project's Oregon Mathways Initiative, the Oregon Coast STEM Hub is piloting a +1 high school Financial Algebra course in Lincoln County. The Financial Algebra Course engages students with real-world financial applications while maintaining deep mathematical rigor. To learn more and to see this course in action either in person (travel reimbursement included) or via Zoom please contact Lincoln County School District.

CoastWatch in the Schools
For Coos, Curry, and Douglas County

CoastWatch is looking to engage three to six classrooms to participate in springtime art, ecology and shoreline workshops. Learn about king tides, marine debris, snowy plover habitats, and more! Funding is available. Contact CoastWatch by Dec 21 to express interest.

Hutton Junior Fish Biology Internship
Apply Dec 12th - Feb 14th

Selected students, known as Hutton Scholars, are matched and mentored by a fisheries professional for an 8-week paid internship. Students can expect a hands-on fisheries science experience in a marine and/or freshwater setting conducting research both in a laboratory and field setting. Learn more
Renewable Energy Challenge
March 21st 9AM-2:30PM

Students in grades 3-12 from Oregon coastal school districts are invited to bring their student-built wave energy, wind energy, and solar devices to Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center for this engaging competition event. Students will test their devices in wave tanks, wind tunnels, and solar tracks, and should bring a poster explaining their design process, how the device functions, and its potential benefits and impacts.  Learn more

Statewide Computer Science Plan Engagement Sessions

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and the Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) are hosting virtual engagement sessions in December and January to discuss and share ideas on the 2022 Governor’s computer science directive. They are hoping to hear from educators, career connected partners, students, families, and community members from across the state. Learn more * Download a flyer

Thank You Cait!
Cait Goodwin is taking on additional duties at Oregon Sea Grant and so will no longer serve as the Communications Coordinator for the Oregon Coast STEM Hub. We will miss her as part of our STEM Hub Backbone team and are so glad she won't be far away! You can still find her at Hatfield, via the same email address, and at Oregon Sea Grant workshops and events.
