USBIG NewsFlash Volume 18, no. 104, February 2017

EDITORIAL

Interest in basic income is growing, and the US Basic Income Guarantee Network is rising to the challenge. At the end of 2016 we registered as a non-profit organization, USBIG, Inc.  This will enable us to receive donations, with which we can provide some financial support to the annual North American Basic Income Guarantee Congress, and build our own organization. Our initial priorities will include upgrading our website, fundraising, publicity, and organizing volunteers. You can now donate via Paypal directly from the website, usbig.net.  If every member gave just $15 annually we would have a decent small operating budget for our all-volunteer organization. With the sudden upsurge in activism around the country, now is the time to bring basic income into the conversation.

The North American Basic Income Guarantee Congress will be in New York City, June 15-18, 2017. Registration information will be up on the website soon. Confirrmed speakers include Andy Stern, former President of SEIU; Ian Bassin of Give Directly; Karl Widerquist, BIEN; Diane Pagen, Social Policy, Rutgers; Natalie Foster, advisor to the Aspen Institute Future of Work Initiative and the Open Society Foundations; Chris Hughes, cofounder of Facebook; Francis Fox Piven, Political Science and Sociology, CUNY.
