Excelsior's Nutrition course challenges students to apply their knowledge in a real-world context
The course objectives for the Excelsior College Nutrition and Wellness course include the ability to define and describe the concepts of health, nutrition, and wellness and how they relate to prevention and treatment of chronic disease. Students must demonstrate the ability to identify key components of a healthy diet and develop an individualized diet plan designed to meet healthy eating goals.
One Author-created activity in the course lets students apply their learning by placing them in a role as the head of a household taking a trip to the grocery store to buy food for the entire family. They face a number of challenges as they try to buy enough servings with a limited budget while remaining aware of family health issues and limited food preparation times.
Author activities are featured in other Excelsior courses this fall. More details in our next issue.

Student testing underway for Library of Congress Kid Citizen project
Kindergarten students in Tampa, Florida recently tested the Kid Citizen prototype created with Author. Here are some highlights noted by our team:
The children played through the complete episode, without needing prompting or encouragement. They liked and were engaged with the Ella character, and followed her comments and direction.
The collecting of image elements to the Journal was engaging and rewarding for the children - one child saying “yay!” when things were collected to the journal.
We learned about many details relating to flow, usability, and children’s interaction with the user interface.
We'll share more about this next month.
Kid Citizen is a project for the Library of Congress. The objective is to create and deliver a series of activities for elementary grade students to explore civics and government concepts through historical sources, and connect what they find with their daily lives. Teachers can draw on the Library’s collection of digital assets and use the Muzzy Lane Author tools to create new activities. The team developing Kid Citizen includes Muzzy Lane and educators from the University of South Florida.

As the fall semester continues, we'll be sharing feedback from students using Author-created activities as part of their learning.
Build better assessment and feedback with new scoring options
We've added additional scoring options to SmartChat and Smartpick. Authors can also now "pin" individual scoring categories to the activity screen giving students customizable feedback and letting them see the results of the decisions they make immediately reflected in the scoring.
Within the editor, you now have a summary panel for the scoring categories you've created, allowing you to see all the scores you've set, results, and the feedback messages triggered by specific scoring ranges..
