Principal's Report

It’s hard to believe that we have already completed the first six-weeks of school! Report cards were made available last Friday. I would like to encourage everyone to opt for a paperless report card, in order to conserve printing costs and be more environmentally friendly. Please call the office if you wish to make any changes in your Home Access Center.
Our ELM (Engage to Learn Model) projects have begun, and teachers are moving through the protocols with our students. You should be hearing some great conversations about these new learning projects at home. As I visit classrooms, I am already hearing a higher level of student discourse and excitement. Don’t be surprised if you are asked to “launch” a project or provide an “authentic audience” for a report.
As we move forward through this school year, I hope you experience many exciting learning adventures with your student!

Mustang Proud,
Melanie Graham
HLES Principal

It was a fantastic fall festival this past Friday night! I want to recognize and thank Christine Itzkowitz and her committee for a well organized and fun event. The PTA schedule is packed with more exciting programs. We appreciate your continued participation, voluntary hours and financial support in making these future PTA events a success.

Save the date for our annual Spring Creek Spirit Night!

It’s happening on Tuesday, November 15th.

Spring Creek will donate 20% of the night’s proceeds back to HLES PTA. It’s always a big fundraising event where we have the opportunity to earn thousands of dollars for school. So join your HLES family for dinner at Spring Creek on November 15th, and be sure to say, “I’m with Hidden Lakes Elementary,” to ensure your order counts toward the donation. Don’t forget to invite your friends and family too! We’ll see you at Spring Creek!

HLES classes are battling for the gold in our Box Tops Olympics. And we only have a few more weeks before the final tallies are in to see who brought in the most! The deadline to submit Box Tops for the contest is Friday, October 21st. As we’ve mentioned, each Box Top is worth 10 cents. Last year, we raised over $2,000 for the HLES PTA! Let’s see if we can beat that number this school year! Keep clipping those Box Tops and maybe your child’s class will bring home the gold medal!

Currently we have 307 members and need only 100 more to meet the goal of every child at HLES being represented by a PTA Membership. Please show your support for our school and its educational resources by joining HLES PTA.

Special thanks to all the families that have more HLES PTA Members than students attending HLES. Great schools are made from great support!

Teacher Appreciation Lunch
Thank you to all the Fourth Grade families who brought in food items for the teacher luncheon on September 29. It was a big hit!!! The staff was very appreciative of the Texas-style lunch!!! The next one will be December 6th and we will be providing the staff "breakfast for lunch." Third grade families will have the opportunity to help supply food items for the December 6th luncheon!
Tabitha Richter
Thank you Tabitha for your continued dedication and help in making our school amazing! Together we are Mustang Proud

Klaus Mayer is responsible for the yearbook this year. He has a second grader in Mrs. Strom's class, so you may see him walking down the second grade hallway from time to time.

The school year is in full swing and we already have two great events for the yearbook. Klaus is encouraging all of us to take lots of pictures of all of our classroom events and activities throughout the year. The more pictures we have to choose from the better.

Parents, please send your pictures to your class representative, and please include the name of the event and the name of the teacher along with your picture. Your class representative will collect the pictures and forward them to Klaus.

Please note: face paint and masks are prohibited regardless of the day. Students are also expected to bring tennis shoes for recess/PE each day. All students are expected to comply with KISD’s dress code.
Monday, October 24th - "Use Your Head"
Wear red.
Tuesday, October 25th -“Sock it to Drugs” – Everyone wear crazy socks.
Wednesday, October 26th - "Team Up Against Drugs!"
Show your spirit by wearing your favorite team/activity jersey or t-shirt.
Thursday, October 27th -“Lei Off of Drugs”
Wear Hawaiian-themed clothing (appropriate for school; following dress code)
Friday, October 28th  "My Future is Bright Without Drugs"
Dress for your future career. This theme is meant to get your student to begin thinking of future possibilities and interests in careers. Costumes do not have to be elaborate or store bought. However, they do need to be realistic career options. Costumes such as a princess, pirate, Ninja Turtle, or Sponge Bob would be perfect for Halloween, but they are not appropriate for this day, because they do not reflect a career goal.

If your child does not wish to dress up, feel free to substitute with a HLES spirit shirt.
It's just around the corner!! This year HLES will be having a Fun Run! This fundraiser is a HUGE hit! We will kick it off on October 31st and will have a Pep Rally on November 1st for the kids to get pumped up over their goals they will set. It ends on a Thursday, November 10 with the actual run! Be on the look out for further information to come home soon!

Our fundraising goal is to purchase the new mobile convertible bench tables for the cafeteria. These convertible tables will be useful in many different ways! They are multifunctional tables and can be used during lunch and special events, including guest speakers, Kinder graduation, music concerts, and so much more!!!

PTA Membership at Hidden Lakes Elementary not only provides educational resources for every child at Hidden Lakes Elementary, it supports Texas PTA's legislative efforts to make Texas schools a better place to learn for all children. Two of Texas PTA’s legislative health and safety priorities for the 2017 legislative session are: pursuing a ban on powdered alcohol sales to minors and strengthening cyberbullying laws. Powdered Alcohol or Palcohol is a powder that can be mixed with water similar to the way Kool-Aid is mixed with water. It creates an alcoholic beverage equivalent to a shot of vodka that is easy to conceal and over consume. Texas PTA is also advocating that cyberbullying laws be improved to protect children by clarifying the roles and responsibilities of school districts and other officials as well as removing barriers in dealing with offenders. Your PTA membership gives a voice to these important child safety issues.

This year we are excited to bring back Holiday Shop for Kids! The "Don't Miss" event will be held Saturday, December 10th from 9-12 PM. Children will have the chance to shop for family members and friends in a festive environment. They can then wrap their presents with a sense of pride! Santa will be in attendance along with crafts and a hot chocolate bar. **The goal this year is for children to think of and give to others. **

If you can't make Saturday, there will be a "shopping only" event Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 7th & 8th from 3:10-5 PM.
