Our book of the month Robin's Winter Song by Suzanne Barton

Robin's Winter Song is an appealing and beautifully illustrated picture book which explores the magic of the seasons through the eyes of a young robin experiencing his first winter. There is plenty to talk about in the illustrations and lots to learn about animals too.

Sharing this story as the seasons change will give lots of opportunity for children and parents to observe changes together and talk about what they see in the natural world. Borrow the book from your local library, go to your local bookshop, or you can
order online.

Tamiko, a parent, wrote to us...

In July Tamiko wrote:

‘I have just clicked onto LMB and LOVE it already! I have been reading The Hungry Caterpillar, The Gruffalo, Dear Zoo and other stories for the last 6 months to my son and I adore all your ideas on how to expand and develop the stories. Thank you for creating this website.’

We asked her how she was getting on with sharing books with her little boy Vincent who is now nearly one:

She has told us his favourite books are Dear Zoo and Spot’s First Easter (for pulling the flaps); The Very Hungry Caterpillar(for poking his fingers in the holes); Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy as he enjoys the rhymes); 100 First Animals for the variety and colour of the animals.

Our Patron: Jessica Souhami

Our new patron is Jessica Souhami – whose books are generally exquisitely illustrated retellings of traditional stories. Jessica is descended from Russian Jewish immigrants and was formerly a puppeteer. She originally made shadow puppets and travelled around the country bringing to life some of the stories that people have been telling one another for hundreds and thousands of years. Her puppets were very popular and appeared on television.

In the early 1990s Jessica stopped touring. She still wanted to tell stories but wanted to do it through books. Her first book was The Leopard’s Drum, a story from West Africa. The influence of Jessica’s shadow puppets can be seen in the style of her artwork. She creates pictures using collage and each book has its own unique palette of colours that best captures the mood of the story. Jessica’s books include Foxy! (Frances Lincoln), No Dinner (Frances Lincoln) (click for activities)
, Sausages (Frances Lincoln)
, The Leopard’s Drum (Frances Lincoln).

Jessica’s new picture book
Honk, Honk! Hold Tight!

is one of our Top 10 new picture books and tells the traditional and very funny folktale of a princess who will not laugh.
