Welcome to the Lovemybooks newsletter!

Lovemybooks is all about young children enjoying reading and books with their parents, family and friends.

Lovemybooks is FREEand ad-free and created by literacy experts. You can search for books by age group, topic, title or author, and each book has ideas for reading and talking about it and activities to increase children's enjoyment of the story.

You can find our top 10 books (eg new books, classics, information, poetry) and there's advice about learning to read.

Our book of the month Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper

It’s autumn and nearly Halloween! Pumpkin Soup by Helen Cooper is the perfect book. An award-winning picture book about three friends who fall out. Cat, Duck and Squirrel live happily together, making music and delicious pumpkin soup, until duck decides to stir the soup and, instead, stirs up trouble.

The wonderful illustrations encourage children to talk about the story and explore the emotions involved in resolving arguments between friends. There are lots of activities to enjoy – why not borrow the book from your local library or go to your local bookshop or buy online here.

Books about scary things

It's fun feeling just a little bit scared especially if you know that you are really perfectly safe, and that Mum, Dad, a grandparent or carer is close by and there is really no such thing as a ‘Gruffalo’ or a ‘Wild Thing’.

In the lovemybooks scary things collection you will find a great range of books about scary (and not so scary) monsters and ghosts. There are stories about everyday fears here as well; children will be reassured to find out they are not the only one who feels afraid of the dark.

Sarah, a parent, writes for us...

"We started reading to our baby when I was about 7 months pregnant. Partly as a bonding exercise (I’d read a piece on how babies can recognise their mum and dad’s voices) and partly because we’d already been given some lovely books and I wanted to revisit some of my childhood favourites."

"Now he’s five months and we’ve been reading to Freddie ever since. It’s his dad’s turn at night for the last story of the day, usually a quiet one as part of his bedtime routine, but once morning comes around, it’s my turn and that’s when the activities start."

Thanks to Sarah for sending in her story. Hear more from Sarah, and other parents.
