Lunch & Learn - Challenges and Advancements in Research Technology

Where: ERP 9, Room 123
When: Fri., Nov. 6th 11:30 am - 12:30 pm
Event Details:

 

Jim Bush will come to the University of Houston to present multiple topics such as entrepreneurship, technology development, and marketing oilfield technology. The objective of this event is to motivate and develop ideas for students to pursue in their academia leading to a promising future. The tech center tour in Conroe will give students an opportunity to learn about the history of measurement while drilling (MWD).

There will be a tech center tour next semester in Conroe, Texas. The tour will introduce the new technology and developments in MWD tools. Students who attend the workshop will have first priority. NOTE: The tour is limited to 25 students.

This workshop is intended for students enrolled in Capstone Project - Spring 2016, graduate students and PhD students working on a thesis and for students interested in participating in the SPE Paper Contest.

Rebuild Together

We hope everyone is having a fantastic week so far! This is just a friendly reminder that this Saturday, November 7, 2015, University of Houston - SPE will be helping out Rebuild Together Houston at their warehouse. This will be our final volunteering event with this organization for the fall semester, so let's bring some hard-working and determined volunteers out there and show them some Cougar strength! To give you an idea, volunteers will be gathering/unloading materials for other crews, organizing the warehouse, and helping with discarding scrap materials.

All volunteers will be assigned to a certain shift )indicated below) and will receive 5 membership points - remember, the person who accumulates the most membership points, will be awarded a prize at the end of the spring 2016 semester!

The shifts are as follows:
Shift 1: 7:30 am - 10:30 am
Shift 2: 10:30 am - 1:30 pm
Shift 3: 1:30 pm - 4:00 pm
Shift 4: 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

We know its homecoming day, so we are aiming to bring the bulk of volunteers for the Shift 1 and 2. Snacks and drinks will be provided for all volunteers, but you will be responsible for your breakfast and lunch.

IHS Software Presentation

Where: ERP 4, Room 110

The IHS team will present numerous topics pertaining to their software such as reserves workflow, rate transient analysis, and pipeline optimization design. This presentation will give students exposure to commercial software in the oil and gas industry through an in-depth discussion of the applications. The objective is for students to learn about the software services of IHS and to enhance their skills as future petroleum engineers. This workshop is open to all students interested in advancing their career.

Software Demo Licenses will be awarded to all students who attend.

Lunch & Learn - WellBitz

Where: ERP 9, Room 104
When: Wed., Nov. 11th 11:30 am - 12:50 pm
Event Details:


This informational "Lunch and Learn" session will educate students about project management through WellBitz Software. WellBitz gives small independent O&G companies a central workspace to organize all their E&P projects, including drilling, operations, prospects, and investments. This software allows multiple users to collaborate, upload and organize oilfield documents, maps and charts, as well as data analysis. The software includes the ability to execute reserves, economics forecasting, and decline curve analysis.

Industry Involvement Day:
How to Write a Technical Paper

Ms. Perdue will present a workshop on how to write a technical paper to students in preparation for the local student paper contest. The objective of the workshop is to deliver key strengths in writing a technical paper in the industry and advise what to avoid when writing a technical paper. We want UH SPE members to develop this important skill to enhance their careers and become expert technical writers.

This workshop is open to all students interested, however it is primarily for students who intend on participating in the 2016 SPE Student Paper Contest, seniors working on their capstone projects, and graduate students working on their thesis.

2016 SPE Presidential Talk

2016 SPE President, Nathan Meehan, will discuss the current state of the oil and gas industry and the importance of SPE involvement in academic, as well as professional, careers. this is more than an opportunity for our department to gain exposure from a successful and distinguished industry professional who will benefit our chapter along with the PE program going forward.

The objective of this visit is to introduce Mr. Meehan to our program and to educate students about the industry market. We encourage our students and faculty to develop a strong relationship with Mr. Meehan. We believe his extensive experience in the industry will lead to valuable advice, which will enable students to gain confidence in their future as petroleum engineers.

This event is open to all students and faculty.

Social Event: Engineering Alumni Association Tailgate and Football Game


Where: Legends Plaza (in front of TDECU Stadium)

Event Details:

Come tailgate and and watch the Coogs beat the University of Memphis Tigers.This is an opportunity to support your Coogs and network with  University of Houston engineering alumni. The UH Engineering Alumni Association host a tailgating event every football game and you don't want to miss it!

The tailgate sponsor will be Phillips 66, who will be providing food and beverages to all attendees.

 

Wolfram Technology Day in Houston

Where: Houston Technology Center, Main Conference Room

Thurs., Nov 19th, 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Event Details:

UH SPE members have been invited to a Wolfram Technology Day in Houston. You'll hear from Wolfram staff and area users as they highlight the latest developments and how you can apply them as part of your personal workflow.

Most of the presentations will be focused on new and upcoming technologies. There will be talks on specific products, such as Mathematica, Mathematica Online, Wolfram Data Science Platform, and Wolfram System Modeler, including talks on applications within industry and education.

This event is free of charge, but seats are limited, so please register now to reserve your spot.

Do you have passion for teaching and mentoring? Then iEducateUSA would love for you to join their team! They are looking for college students interested in impacting public education. they pay and train their Fellows to be the role models that inspire our future scientists and engineers. 

Requirements:
- Be a US citizen or Green Card holder
- Be a current undergraduate student with a 3.0+ GPA
- Be able to commit at least 10 hours per week
- Have your own transportation
