GOING GREEN FOR EARTH DAY

Today, we face many environmental crises, including global warming, deforestation, endangered wildlife, shortages of potable water and widespread pollution, all which negatively affect our planet’s resources and can have adverse effects on our long-term lifestyle and health.

There are many opportunities to reduce your carbon footprint and live more sustainably. Here are some suggestions for what you can start doing on this year’s Earth Day and every day:
  1. Recycle. Next time you go to the store, buy things that can be easily recycled — like glass jars or tin cans, or eco-friendly things that are made from already recycled things.
  2. Buy Locally. When you buy locally grown foods, you’re supporting farmers who are preserving farmland and the agricultural landscape instead of selling land for development.
  3. Live minimally. Materialistic goods are often wasteful and it turns out they don’t make us very happy. People are realizing that living a simple, minimal life — surrounded by family, friends and pursuing passions — is far more fulfilling, keeps you energized and focused.
  4. Conserve energy. Turn off the lights when you’re not home, unplug all electronics you’re not using and change your regular light bulbs out with compact fluorescent bulbs to reduce as much pollution as removing 1 million cars from the road.
  5. Buy reusable goods. To save the planet (and money), invest in a reusable coffee cup or water bottle.
