Lifesaving - Recent Rescues

UMINA SLSC
3rd December 2017 - Umina Beach Sunday afternoon approx. 5:30pm. Our IRB crew was gearing up for a training session whilst our other lifesavers were packing up the clubs gear from either patrol or the Nipper carnival held at Terrigal the same day. A member of the public was shouting to one of our IRB crew at the waters edge to alert him to an elderly gentleman who had just been pulled from the water by his son in law who had found him laying face down in the water. Our IRB captain swiftly ran over and as his lifesaving skills came in to action, he quickly called for assistance where a master competitor who had just finished training and another IRB race member who had grabbed the first aid kit, defib and radio from the club house. Other clubbies attended to the scene to assist. The first respondent put the gentleman into the recovery position where he was monitored constantly with assistance from other clubbies. An early call to 000 saw the paramedics arrive in around 10mins where a hand over was completed and the professionals rushed the gentleman to ICU.
The prompt and professional action from our club members ensured that the gentleman was given the best chance of making a full recovery.

STREETS SURF BOAT SERIES - Tea Gardens/Hawksnest
Saturday 9th December 2017 - Patient, 45 year old Anthony Duggan from The Entrance SLSC, had just finished his second boat race in the Masters division of the Streets Surf Boat Series and was talking with his fellow crew members on the beach when he collapsed suffering an apparent seizure. Glen Cole (Ocean Beach), Warren Evrard and Chris Milne (The Entrance) noticed this and straight away attended to Anthony treating him appropriately for a seizure. At this time Glen then noticed Anthony was not breathing and had no pulse so immediately commenced CPR. CPR was continued three times as they tried to revive Anthony and then the DeFib from Tea Gardens/ Hawkesnest SLSC Patrol arrived and activity was commenced. Anthony was shocked by the DeFib. He stalled. Then CPR again and Anthony recovered. At this time the paramedics arrived and assessed Anthony and his recovery. All the time a number of members offered to relieve Glen on CPR, including Paul Quick (Terrigal), Shane Walker (Soldiers Beach) and Trina Hellicar (TGHN) however Glen remained calm and efficient in his delivery the whole time. A number of other members assisted with keeping a tarp above all this providing shade and then assisted to carry Anthony on a spinal board up to the club to the ambulance. The paramedics passed on high praise for the members CPR and the degree of professional first aid provided by the members.
Anthony was truly brought back from death and this was the ultimate rescue that lifesavers are trained for.
Sensational success stories from our very skilled Lifesavers - awesome job everyone!
Clubs and members are strongly encouraged to nominate individuals and/or teams involved in any outstanding rescues conducted during or outside of patrol hours, year round, on or off the beach by completing the Rescue of the Month Nomination Form and submitting to the Branch Office.

RWC Launch

For the past five years the Central Coast Leagues Club have been the naming rights partner of the SLSCC Lifesaving Support Operations Team. On Sunday 21 January 2018, SLSCC recognised their incredible support by holding an official media launch at the Killcare Junior Carnival where a new Rescue Water Craft (RWC), funded through the Clubsgrants program, was christened. This new RWC will further increase Surf Life Saving’s ability to protect  the bathing public at Central Coast beaches by supporting surf club patrols in major rescue incidents, providing roving patrols to locations away from the traditional flagged areas and responding to after hours and out of season emergency response incidents when tasked by the NSW Police.
SLSCC now have seven RWC’s located strategically along the Central Coast coastline, five of which have been donated to us by the Central Coast Leagues Club in recent years. In addition to the 1,115 lives saved by our patrolling lifesavers our rescue water craft operators performed 1,087 volunteer patrol hours, rescued a further 240 people in difficulty and prevented a further 1,517 people from danger last season.
On behalf of all at SLSCC, thank you to the Central Coast Leagues Club for your continued support.

''BEACCHES'' Program

Year 4 and year 5 Central Coast future doctors (CCMS), studying medicine through the University of Newcastle on the Central Coast, recently hit the beach to learn more about the response to medical emergencies on the coast or remote locations. The Beginning Education At Central Coast Hospitals (BEACCHES) program is an initiative designed to introduce the students to both the Central Coast region and the clinical environment.
The (CCMS) went to Ocean Beach and took part in mock emergency scenarios, learning surf survival skills from the SLSCC Community Education Team, and getting up close with spiders and snakes brought in by The Australian Reptile Park.
SLSCC Community Education instructors firstly presented a beach safety talk to the students before the students then hit the beach where they were shown how to do tube rescues, ride body boards, rescue boards and to stay safe whilst still having fun on the beach.
A team of Ocean Beach Surf Life Savers gave tips on emergency response with a student mental health forum and BBQ finishing off the day.
What a welcome to the Central Coast!
