Streets RIP Awareness Demonstrations

Beachgoers will again be given a valuable lesson in surf safety this holidays when surf lifesavers release fluoro dye into the surf to highlight rip current movements as part of eight (8) Rip Awareness Demonstration Events.
Rips are the major cause of drowning at Australian beaches, yet most beach goers are unaware of the dangers of rips, how to spot them or what to do if they’re caught in one.
Improving the communities surf awareness, including rips is part of SLSCC’s strategy to combat the increasing drowning rates experienced on NSW beaches last summer. In addition to the dye release, onlookers will be provided with live patent demonstrations on how to swim parallel to escape a rip as well as how to stay calm to survive a rip while local rip experts will provide commentary over the PA system. Over fifteen thousand safety brochures will also be disseminated as part of this program.
This season Streets Rip Awareness Demonstrations will be held over the peak period at MacMasters, Copacabana, Avoca, North Avoca, Terrigal, Wamberal, The Entrance and Soldiers Beach.

Board and Ski Series

It’s been fantastic to see the return of the Board and Ski Series this season which has been highly supported by our local open competitors. Dubbed as SLS’s equivalent of 20/20 cricket, so far we’ve had 158 competitors compete across the first two rounds hosted by Terrigal and Avoca Beach. With competitors racing in four rounds of both the Board and ski within two hours, the series provides the perfect development platform for local competitors in a fun and flexible environment.
The final round will be hosted by Umina SLSC on Sunday 7 January, starting at 1.00pm.
Check out some of the action from the last round by clicking here!
