SNPHN announces $1.7 million in funding to new local alcohol and other drug services

Sydney North Primary Health Network (SNPHN) is pleased to announce three local service providers will receive Federal funding for new programs to support people in the region in need of alcohol and other drug treatment services.

SNPHN Board Chair, Dr Magdalen Campbell, said the new funding of $1.7 million will increase capacity of local organisations to meet demand for alcohol and other drug services, including ice rehabilitation. The funding for local services is part of the Government’s response to the National Ice Taskforce report.

• With April Falls Day on 3 April, here’s an update on the iSOLVE falls prevention project, a partnership between the University of Sydney, the NSW Clinical Excellence Commission and SNPHN.

• SNPHN has a new tender open! We are looking to commission innovative and creative approaches to supporting quality End of Life Care initiatives in Residential Aged Care Facilities that enable fewer unplanned hospitalisations, particularly after hours.

• Interested in participating in any research projects for GPs or health professionals? There are currently four opportunities on SNPHN’s new Research & Studies page, including a smoker’s study and another on treating psychological injuries in NSW under WorkCover and CTP.

In this month’s GP News we bring you the following information:

• The Turnbull Government will continue to support drug and alcohol treatment services across Australia with funding of more than $75 million a year.

• BreastScreen NSW need support from GPs in encouraging women to have regular screening mammograms. There are free resources including an electronic GP referral form, brochures and factsheets.

• This year, World Kidney Day promoted education about the harmful consequences of obesity and its association with kidney disease. 

• The National Diabetes Service Scheme (NDSS) has released a Diabetes and Emotional Health handbook and related fact sheets for the community.

• A reminder for GPs about existing resources supporting the Per- and Poly-fluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) blood testing program. 

• The Genetic and Rare Disease Network in Western Australia is compiling a register of health professionals who have specialist knowledge and experience in a particular rare and/or genetic disease.

• My Life, My Lead is a new online public consultation portal to highlight the issues that support or impede Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to have good health.

• A private Geriatrician is now available on the Northern Beaches for one-off second opinions for GPs.

• NSW Health has released a Zostavax Contraindications update for NSW General Practitioners.  

• The Spring - Summer 2016 issue of the Stigma Newsletter contains information on Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and STI Rates in NSW. PrEP is the use of antiretroviral drugs by HIV-negative individuals to prevent HIV infection and is licensed by the TGA but not under the PBS.
