Scottish Imaging Network: A Platform for Scientific Excellence

A wonderful day of science and networking was had at the 2016 SINAPSE Annual Scientific Meeting in Stirling on 17 June. Many thanks to all of the presenters for sharing their interesting research, and congratulations to our three prize winners:

Best Proffered Talk
  • Thomas Di Virgilio, University of Stirling - 'Using Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to identify acute brain changes following sub-concussive head impact'
Best Poster
  • Morning session: Aaron Daubney, University of St Andrews - 'Comparison of NeuroImaging MRI Data Pre and Post Scanner Upgrade'
  • Afternoon session: Thomas Pearson, University of Edinburgh - 'Multi-modal retinal scanning for diagnostic and therapeutic biomarker discovery in Multiple Sclerosis'

Side note: Our keynote speaker, Dr Jon Simons, is currently recruiting a Postgraduate Research Assistant for his memory lab at University of Cambridge:

Taiwan visit by SINAPSE researchers

With funding from the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) and the Taiwan Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), two SINAPSE image analysis experts recently visited National Taiwan University in Taipei to initiate an international research collaboration on diffusion MRI data analysis. More details...
Dr Gordon Waiter (left) and Dr David Dickie (second from left) traveled to Taipei to visit the lab of Prof Wen-Yih Isaac Tseng, who leads a group developing the TBAA (Tract Based Automatic Analysis) technique.

This photo shows the SINAPSE visitors with members of Prof Tseng's lab including postgraduate research students and research assistants.

BRAINS Imagebank data now available

The Brain Imaging of Normal Subjects (BRAINS) project at the University of Edinburgh now has brain MRI from birth to old age available to request. More details...

Image of the Month: Magnetic Resonance Elastography

Our July Image of the Month, courtesy of Prof Neil Roberts and Lucy Hiscox, illustrates Magnetic Resonance Elastography (MRE), a new MRI-based technique that enables non-invasive palpation of living tissues so as to measure their mechanical properties. Click the link above to view the MRE wave motion in an animated phase image!

More submissions needed! Please help us continue to publicise Scottish imaging research by e-mailing your interesting and impressive images to, including an image credit and short descriptive caption for each one (and optionally a link to your research webpage).

SINAPSE Member Profile: Emma Pead

At the start of this year, SINAPSE awarded funding for PhD studentships on imaging-related research projects in partnership with external organisations. Beginning this month, the Member Profile section of our newsletter will introduce the incoming students.
Emma Pead is embarking on the University of Edinburgh PhD Clinical Brain Sciences studentship where her project is titled 'Assessing neurodegeneration of the retina and brain with ultra-widefield imaging' with Dr Tom MacGillivray, funded by SINAPSE and Optos. The aim of the project is to develop a multi-modal approach to analysis of retinal images to yield biomarkers of neurodegeneration, with particular implication to AMD. Emma completed a BSc(Hons) Biological Sciences (Molecular Biology) at the University of Edinburgh in 2015. She is currently finishing her MSc in Bioinformatics, Polyomics and Systems Biology at the University of Glasgow. Her research interests are that of image analysis and software development with a clear application to a clinical setting. She is particularly interested in development of interdisciplinary approaches to image analysis, such as incorporation of machine learning algorithms, genomics and proteomics data. She hopes to be incorporating these aspects into her PhD project.
