Friends,

When we decided to pilot an emergency grant program in partnership with Scholarship America earlier this year, we could have never known how critical and impactful this program would be in this moment. Since the COVID-19 crisis hit, we have received more than 300 emergency grant applications and given over $93,000 to Scholars to assist with food, shelter, technology for classes, and medical expenses. Here’s what a few of our Scholars have shared back:

“The funds were extremely helpful, and I thank you for your contributions. I can focus on my education through these troubling times.”

"Thank you all so much. This is going to help my family out tremendously. ❤️"

The COVID-19 pandemic has pulled back the curtain on a sobering reality: many college students struggle to make it through every week and are just one unexpected event – minor or major – away from not being able to complete college. But with assistance, we know that our Scholars will continue to achieve great things. Their dreams will not be canceled.

You can read about our latest support efforts below.

Be well everyone,

Tina Fernandez
Executive Director, Achieve Atlanta
We have been working with Atlanta Public Schools to figure out how to transform traditional events like Decision Day and Scholar Night to a virtual format. We are excited to celebrate "virtually" our new class of Achieve Atlanta Scholars!

With partners, we’ve also continued to support juniors in starting their college search by using our Match and Fit List Builder. To date, 838 students have used the Match and Fit List Builder to create balanced college lists. If you know an APS junior, please encourage them to use their latest SAT score to build their list.
The unemployment numbers released this week were staggering and those included college students across the nation, including many of our Scholars. With campuses closed, Scholars who had on-campus jobs or positions near their campus are now out of work and without income. For Scholars who may still have income, their parent/guardian may now be unemployed – making Scholars the head of their household. We’re working on targeted support for Scholars, and are thankful that several of you have asked to contribute to the Emergency Grant Fund so that we can continue to support their needs.

If you’d like to make a tax-deductible donation to the Achieve Atlanta Emergency Grant Fund, you can donate here.
The University System of Georgia announced this week that all instruction will take place online for the remainder of this semester and for the summer semester. Our college success team has continued to communicate with Scholars, and next week we will send out a survey to gauge how our Scholars are doing – emotionally, academically, and financially. As we receive the survey results, we will work with students to support their needs and help them persist through this crisis.

We continue to gather and share resources with our partners working directly with Achieve Atlanta Scholars. You can find a few of those links below, and we have other resources available to Scholars on our website:
