April 2017

Dear <<First Name>>,

Happy Spring! When the sun shines and the flowers bud, I feel so much more energized and happier. I hope the season's change is having the same effect on you. Though our Club has a reduced program this month due to the schools' Spring Break, there are still fun events on the calendar, see our listings below.  We have a few important administrative announcements this month.

The Board's First VP Becky Duke has regrettably had to step down due to the increasing demands of her new business venture, which will include lengthy absences from Berlin. Thank you, Becky, for all your hard work this year - we have received wonderful feedback on our programs thanks to your dedication! We wish you every success with your new endeavor and look forward to seeing you again in the Fall.  We are happy to announce the appointment of both Lissa Rosenbloom and Joni Suchordlt as Co-First-VPs. We look forward to more  fabulous programs under their leadership. If you have ideas for activities, please don't hesitate to email vp-programs@awcberlin.org.

The Board has made the decision to further support our members by promoting your businesses on our website for free. If you would like to take advantage of this new member benefit, send an image (logo or photo) and a short description of your business (50 word max, including your website) to me at secretary@awcberlin.org. A new page for these listings will be created on the AWC Berlin website by end of April.

The Board has also had a chance to develop a budget for this year - for your information, view 2017 budget here.

In case you missed it, here is our Special Bulletin on our recent V-Day 2017. With our benefit production of Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues, AWC Berlin raised 4500 Euro for TERRE DES FEMMES, a Berlin-based human rights NGO working on ending violence against women.  Thanks again to Molly Moylan Brown and the cast, crew and volunteers all of whom insured the resounding success of this community project. We will stage this production again next February to mark the 20th anniversary of V-DAY.

Our next FUN-Raiser will be a Charity Fashion Show, Style & Sustainability, this coming autumn, in collaboration with the German Fashion Council and ESMOD Berlin International Academy of Fashion - stay tuned for more information.

I wish you a beautiful start of Spring and a relaxing Easter Holiday.

love,
My-Linh

Daytime Book Club - Thursday, April 20th, 10am - 12 noon. Our Book Club alternates between daytime and evening meetings every other month.  This accommodates our members’ work schedules and also allows for bi-monthly participation.

April’s book club selection is The Geek Feminist Revolution by Hugo-award winning writer Kameron Hurley. A powerful collection of essays on feminism, geek culture, and a writer’s journey, from one of the most important new voices in genre. The book collects dozens of Hurley’s essays on feminism, geek culture, and her experiences and insights as a genre writer, including “We Have Always Fought,” which won the 2014 Hugo for Best Related Work. The Geek Feminist Revolution will also feature several entirely new essays written specifically for this volume. Unapologetically outspoken, Hurley has contributed essays to The Atlantic, Locus, Tor.com, and elsewhere on the rise of women in genre, her passion for SF/F, and the diversification of publishing. Please RSVP to bookclub@awcberlin.org and please bring light nibbles to share.

Exhibit: The Luther Effect - Wednesday, April 26th, 10:30am-2pm.  Join us at Martin Gropius Bar to view the exhibit "Luther Effect:  Protestantism 500 Years in the World". This exhibit celebrates the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s Theses and the beginning of the Reformation. The exhibit spans the time from the Reformation to the present day and examines the global effects of Protestantism. The exhibition focuses on the question of the “Luther effect”: What impact and consequences did the Reformation have and what role did the historical person Martin Luther play in this? This is one of 4 national exhibits celebrating the 500th anniversary of Luther and the Reformation. Lunch afterwards for anyone interested in the museum cafe. For more details, please click here and here. Please RSVP to  Becky at 1stvp.awcberlin@gmail.com.

Berlin Designer Shop Crawl - Thursday, April 27th, 11:00am-2pm. We shall visit shops of local and international designers, located along small streets of a vibrant Mitte neighborhood, around Rosa Luxemburg Platz. The focal point of a tour is to find out how the idea of sustainability in fashion can help you create a unique style! We start with a Swedish store, Filippa K, one of the leading sustainability fashion labels in the world. We will find out all about this concept there and will carry on to find a sustainable wardrobe for ourselves and to learn how to build one. For details, please click here

FAWCO Update

AWC Berlin is a proud founding member of FAWCO (www.fawco.org), an international network of American and International women's clubs like ours in 40 countries. FAWCO is active as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with special consultative status to the UN Economic and Social Council. By being a member of AWC Berlin, you are automatically a member of FAWCO.

By the time you read this, I will be in Mumbai for the FAWCO Annual Conference.  AWC Berlin will be represented by Angelika McLarren, Nisha Missigbrodt and myself. We will get to vote on development grants (DG) recipients for the 5 DGs offered by The FAWCO Foundation. If you are interested, here are the nominees. Please don't cast any vote as we will be doing that at the conference.

Stay tuned for our daily postings in the Facebook Group.
