September 2016

Dear <<First Name>>,

Welcome back! I hope you have had a relaxing and fun summer.

After a short break in August, our Club is back en force this month with a full calendar. While the weather is still nice, we are outdoors this month for the Family Welcome Back Picnic, a Cycling Tour along the river Havel, and a Walking Tour through 2 of Berlin's coolest neighborhoods. Even museum & gallery visits are followed by walkabouts around lake Grunewaldsee and the trendy neighborhood of Auguststrasse. I hope you'll get out and join us this month.

I'd like to welcome our 19 (!!) new members and look forward to seeing you at the General Meeting on September 9th and meeting your family at the "Welcome Back Family Picnic" on Sunday, September 11th. For newcomers to Berlin, you should have received an invitation for our Skype call on Wednesday, August 31st 7pm (if not, please let me know). Purpose of the call is to introduce you to each other and answer any "settling in" questions you still have. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out if you need help.

As you plan ahead, check out the Special Events Calendar and mark those dates, I hope for strong turnouts at these events, especially for the upcoming Women & Leadership event on October 12th 7-9pm. We have a beautiful venue and excellent high-level external speakers, including keynote speaker Kimberly Marteau Emerson, wife of our US Ambassador John B. Emerson.

See you soon!

Volunteers Needed!

In October, we will have a general call for nominees for our Board of Directors 2017 (the one-year term starts in January).  If you or someone you know would like to join our Board, please email

Remember, volunteering for the Club is a great opportunity to continue to develop skills and make new friends while helping and giving back to the Club and the Berlin community.

We also still need help with the following tasks (no previous experience required). Consider to volunteer for a position (ie. Web Manager, Special Events Chair) or just a specific task - anything would be helpful!
  1. Web Manager or Website Updates
  2. Activity Chairs for Walking Tours, Culture Outings, Creative Pursuits, ...
  3. Evening General Meetings team
  4. Daytime General Meetings team
  5. FAWCO Regional Meeting Hospitality Team (November 11-13, 2016)
  6. German Conversations West is seeking just one more coordinator to share coordination of this fun (and free!) activity in Dahlem
I look forward to hear from you! Contact My-Linh at or 0176 7069 7106

Now it's our turn to learn how to cook delicious and authentic Thai dishes at home! Bring your own wine and couples are welcome, cost is 30€ per person. Opened in 2014, the gallery’s main emphasis is on the works of artists from the so called Lost Generation. Weekly German Conversations - AWC Berlin is proud to announce that we now have 2 German Conversations Groups meeting Mondays and Wednesdays 10am-12noon! Come once a week or twice or whenever you can, you don’t have to RSVP, just show up at the Group most convenient for you– there will always be a group of us conversing in German. This is a safe place to practice and develop your skills; sometimes we are joined by AWC Berlin members that are native German speakers and sometimes we teach ourselves. But, be assured it will always be fun and lively discussion. For general information please direct your questions to

Group 1: Conversational West - meet at Wiener Cafe at Truman Plaza (Clayallee 75) in Dahlem.
Group 2: Conversational East - meet at Nola's am Weinberg (Veteranstr. 9) in Mitte. For more details, contact Melissa Tan via Facebook private message or email her at (please allow several days for a response).

BEADING GROUP, led by Susanne Ollmann, welcomes new and established beaders.  We alternate meeting at one another's homes throughout the month, occasionally go shopping for beadmaking tools, stones, and other pieces.  Come discover a craft that is therapeutic, aesthetic, and offers great possibilities for personalized gift-making.  Please contact Susanne Ollmann at

TUTORS WANTED: for refugee kids at JFK. Molly Brown will be coordinating a new AWC Berlin Community Service initiative in September where volunteers will provide tutoring services (primarily English) to two teen refugee classes (Wilkommen Klassen) at the John F. Kennedy School (ages 13-16). As it stands now the days will likely be Mondays and Thursdays after 2:30 pm. Molly would like to know who might be interested (even if you already expressed interest after the first announcement was published before the summer break), your available times and how often each month. With this information, she can begin to book the dates. It would be helpful if you could also let her know if you have any other language skills from conversational to fluent (e.g. German, Farsi, Arabic, Kurdish, etc.), though not a requirement. If we have enough volunteers who could contribute an hour, an individual volunteer could come as often as 2x/week or for as little as 1 or 2x a month. With the Panel on Refugees: Integration through Education coming up in November, as part of the FAWCO regional conference, this would give AWC Berlin members direct hands-on experience with an aspect of education. Please contact Molly at
