January 2017

Dear <<First Name>>,

Happy New Year 2017! I wish you and yours a new year full of health, joy and inspiration. In December, nearly 60 members attended our Annual General Meeting at the Hallesches Haus. Click HERE to see the report back: photos, reports and 2017 outlook. A new Board of Directors for 2017 was elected: I would like to welcome 1st VP Becky Duke (Programs), 2nd VP Karen Castellon (Membership), Secretary Claudia Tessier and Treasurer Jennifer Padfield and am looking forward to a productive and inspiring year working with these wonderfully creative and empowered women.

Speaking of empowered women, our speaker for the January General Meeting is NPR Berlin Bureau Chief, Foreign Correspondent Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson. Join us on Friday, January 13th at 11am to hear her talk about her experiences as an award-winning journalist (see below for details).

We have two new activity groups starting this month: "Dining-Out" on the weekends with partners (chaired by Indira Faltin & Nisha Missigbrodt), and "20s & 30s" for our members around that age group (chaired by Jennifer Padfield & Elizabeth Heidenreich).  Look out for their events in the upcoming month.

January is the perfect time to detox holiday excess and get started on your nutrition and wellness goals. We invite you to join our two wellness events this month (see below for details - one is happening this coming Tuesday).

and lastly, VAGINA MONOLOGUES ANNOUNCEMENT:

We are delighted to announce that The American Women’s Club of Berlin will be producing Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues”, directed by Molly Moylan Brown. Our production, slated for February, is part of V-Day, Ensler’s powerful and enduring 19-year campaign to end violence against women. In addition to the many roles to be cast - no theatre experience required - we need volunteer support in the areas of tech (sound, lights), set/staging (very simple production values), costume/makeup, publicity & promotion, photography, videography, and program design. Please contact Molly Brown at vday@awcberlin.org , indicating which area(s) of this project you’d like to support. There will be 3-4 rehearsals TOTAL (including tech/dress rehearsal).

For more information about the play, read AWC member Allegra Silbiger's recent blog post on V-Day Vagina Monologues.

Looking forward to your participation in this transformative community project!

Partners Invited! AWC Berlin is proud to announce the launch of our new monthly Dining Out event, where members and their partners visit fabulous restaurants around Berlin. This is an opportunity for the significant others to meet and socialize.

In January, we visit a classic – the 12 Apostels in Mitte. The Twelve Apostle’s Restaurant or (in German) “12 Apostel” is a feast for both the eyes and the stomach. Beautiful frescos line the interior walls and ceiling depicting the twelve Biblical apostles of Christ. from the Guardian:  An amazing restaurant … “The Twelve Apostles” introduced Berlin to 12 types of pizza named for the 12 apostles. The most popular version is the Judas. I have never eaten food so tasty in such perfect surroundings." For details, click

Activities -JANUARY 2017

Evening:

Book Club - Thursday, January 12, 7pm - 9pm. Our Book Club alternates between daytime and evening meetings every other month.  This accommodates our members’ work schedules and also allows for bi-monthly participation.

This month's book is the #1 New York Times Bestseller and Pulitzer Prize-finalist Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates.  a series of essays, written as a letter to his son, Coates confronts the notion of race in America and how it has shaped American history, many times at the cost of black bodies and lives. A timely work, this title will resonate with all; from those who have experienced racism as well as those who have followed the recent news coverage on violence against people of color.  Please join us for what will surely be a lively discussion.  RSVP to Claudia at bookclub@awcberlin.org.

(Girls) Evening-Out at Hashi  - Thursday, January 19, 7pm.  Hashi Izakaya Japanese Kitchen is Berlin’s original Izakaya; offering Berliners their first glimpse into the culture of sake and tapas from Japan. Located in the heart of Mitte. Izakaya originated in Japan’s pub culture- a little food and a lot of sake and beer! Izakaya is a more communal style of enjoying food, with drinks and several small tapas style dishes shared between patrons. It’s a common way for Japanese people to kick off their Feierabend after work. The style is similar to a Spanish tapas bar, and offers patrons the chance to explore and enjoy many different dishes in one meal. Share your food among yourselves because the Izakaya-experience is all about sharing and exploring different flavours! Please RSVP to Evening@awcberlin.org.

Weekend:

Dining Out Event at 12 Apostel - Saturday, January 14, 7pm - 9pm. See above Featured Event box.

Women's Salon with Sharon Kuckuck - Saturday, January 21, 2 - 4 pm.
Righting great historical wrongs! A look at Holocaust compensation as a form of reconciliation. What price can be paid to right the greatest theft in human history? Can money and products exchanged by the German government to the state of Israel, make Germany and the Jewish people whole again? Who was served by compensation, the victims alive and dead, the German people and how else can we right great historical wrongs of the past today? This literary salon looks at how these questions were answered in the wake of World War II in regard to the Jewish victims and explores the larger issues facing governments today. Sharon will share her Master's Thesis and looks forward to a lively discussion after her presentation.  RSVP to Jennifer at womens.salon@awcberlin.org

Ice Skating Event - Sunday, January 22, 1-3pm. Open to families and guests! Robert Doisneau Exhibit - Thursday, January 19, 11:00 am - 2 pm.  Very few photographers have become famous through a single picture. “Le Baiser de l’Hôtel de Ville” (The Kiss by the Hôtel de Ville) is such a picture, which Robert Doisneau (1912–1994) took in March 1950 in front of a Parisian street café in the Rue de Rivoli. The image of the couple kissing was a work commissioned by LIFE magazine. Although it was staged, it contains an entire story: It became the symbol of Paris as the “city of love”. It is one of the iconic photographs of the 20th century.  The exhibition provides an inside view of Doisneau’s work with around 100 selected photographs – most of them taken during the 1940s and 50s. Location: Martin Gropius Bau, Niederkirchnerstrasse 7.  Meet in the lobby by the ticket desk. Cost: 7 Euro. We’ll go in through the exhibit and have lunch together afterwards in the Cafe.
