November 2016

Dear <<First Name>>,

I just went out and bought myself a colorful bouquet of Fall flowers, to combat the October grey and wet weather.  Winter in Berlin could be really dreary, but just put on a raincoat and come join one of our many fun events! Should you ever feel blue, do reach out to a fellow AWC member (or me) for a cuppa or an exhibit, chances are that she is/ I am feeling the same. There is no need to sit at home alone.  This month we will not have a general meeting, rather we will celebrate Thanksgiving together. You are invited to either Thanksgiving Luncheon on November 16th or Thanksgiving Dinner on Thanksgiving itself November 24th. Please see below and join us at one of the celebrations.

Congratulations to Molly Brown and her team of AWC Tutors for the successful completion of their English tutoring program of the refugee teens at JFK School.  She is following up to see if we could continue the program once they settle in their respective schools, and perhaps also offer our tutoring program to other schools with refugee classes.

In case you missed it, our Women & Leadership event at the Volkswagen Group Forum on October 12th, 2016 was very well received with 110 people in attendance and nice press coverage.  Click here to see AWC Berlin in the News and read Molly's post about it on our blog Berlin Americana.

AWC Berlin is proud to present Home & Away: An Evening of Music and Stories by Robin Meloy Goldsby. Robin Meloy Goldsby recounts her adventures in Germany as she learns a new language, adapts to a new culture, and finds new friends. We’ll also celebrate the publication of Goldsby’s newest book, Manhattan Road Trip. The program will be presented in English. For more information about Steinway artist Goldsby, please click here

TOUR OF TEMPELHOF AIRPORT & CAKE AT REFUGEES CAFE - Saturday, November 6, 2016, 1:30-5pm

Visit one of the most spectacular buildings of Europe. Explore one of the main hubs of Berlin airlift and a landmark of the Third Reich. Tempelhof Airport’s main building is a historically protected landmark and a symbol of the eventful history of Berlin itself. On the one hand, it is an expression of Nazi ideology and served in World War II as a weapons production site using forced labour. On the other hand, Tempelhof is also a symbol of freedom, and the Air Lift of 1948/49 made the airport famous throughout the world. During the division of Germany the airport was the gateway to freedom for many people. Over the course of our roughly 2 hour walking tours, we will be taken to the most interesting parts of the huge building, which has a surface space of 300,000 square metres. Afterwards, we will have coffee and cake together at the THF Cafe (Hangar 1), a cafe for refugees and Berliners alike to mix and mingle. Info here: Please RSVP to Karen at but you must buy your own online tickets.
