July 2015

June has been a busy re-LAUNCH month for AWC Berlin. We hosted a Speakers Series event for 50 people, cooked dinner for 40 at the Ronald McDonald House, visited the World Press Photos 2015 exhibit, and met our first membership milestone. Full-time working members have requested evening activities, so we are launching Evening C&C (Cocktails and Conversation) this month, getting together at one of our member's favorite hidden gems (see below). We were planning to take a summer break until September, but there is so much interest and energy bubbling up in our small but growing membership that we are getting together a couple of times in July.  I hope to see you at one of these events.

Happy Summer! (next week the weather will be summer again, perfect for our Summer Brunch)

re.LAUNCH Membership Drive

In May, the Club was still on hiatus. Now, after re.LAUNCHed in June, we are up to 27 members !!!

Our goal is to have 50 members by the end of the year.  If each of us just invite ONE of our friends to join, we will meet our goal.  We have a special re.LAUNCH membership offer right now until we get to 50 members.

Join now for 2015 & 2016 for only 60 euro (that's a 40% savings as normal annual dues are 50€).

Membership is open to women of all nationalities who embody or appreciate the “American Spirit” –  the spirit of giving, the can-do attitude, the desire to learn and grow, and the drive to make a difference – while still having a lot of fun!  We continually seek out like-minded souls to join our vibrant community!

So please invite your friends to check out our website www.awcberlin.org and click JOIN - all it takes is just one or two!

Looking ahead - September

In September, the Club will be in full swing.

Our Special Event will be the Labor Day Picnic. In the US, Labor Day (around the first weekend of September) marks the end of summer as beach house rentals are returned and everyone prepares for back-to-school. Let us start the tradition of having our Welcome Back post-summer event on Labor Day, it seems appropriate. This year, we'd like to welcome everyone back with a weekend picnic with family. Bring our own picnic and meet at a park (with nearby facilities) - location TBC.  please mark the date - Sunday, September 6th at 2pm.

On Thursday, September 10th starting at 6pm, AWC Berlin will be cooking our quarterly dinner for the Ronald McDonald House Berlin. Come join us for a fun evening cooking and serving dinners for the families in the house. For more info, please email Angelika McLarren at treasurer@awcberlin.org.

Weekly activity - Yoga in English. If you are interested, please email me at president@awcberlin.org. The teacher is available for a Thursday morning class (10.30am-11.30am). We have space for 5-6 people, which would make each class costs 10-12€. You wouldn't need to sign up for a series, however, it's important for group development and planning our costs to find a group with regular participants.

Monthly activities (details in the next newsletter) - Book Club will start and Daytime C&C (Cappuccino & Culture) and Evening C&C (Cocktails & Conversation) will continue with fun activities.

Bi-Monthly activities - We will kick-off Weekend Biking with a ride along the Mauer Weg on Sunday, September 20th and Creative Pursuits with a workshop on Mobile Photography (details TBC).

Our blog should have its first posting.  We blog Berlin stories in the voice of an American woman living here – or the “Americana”.  If you would like to contribute, please email our blog editor Molly Brown at BerlinAmericana@awcberlin.org

FAWCO Logo
AWC Berlin is a member of FAWCO (www.fawco.org), an international network of American and International women's clubs like ours in 40 countries. FAWCO is active as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with special consultative status to the UN Economic and Social Council. By being a member of AWC Berlin, you are automatically a member of FAWCO.

This month, I'd like to introduce you to The FAWCO Foundation. The FAWCO Foundation is the philanthropic arm of FAWCO. The Foundation has four main programs: Development Grants for local charities nominated by FAWCO member clubs (that's us!), Education Awards for members and children of members (that's us!), fundraising for the FAWCO Target Program, and fundraising for the NEEEED Scholarship (an education program to train midwives and nurses in Burkina Faso).

In 2009, I was a recipient of the Member Skills Enhancement award, enabling me to complete my photojournalism class.  The education awards are there for you and your children to apply.

Next month I'll talk about the FAWCO Youth Program.
