September 2015

Welcome Back! I hope you have had a fun and relaxed summer and are energized now for new ideas and activities with the AWC Berlin.

Our Club is in full swing this month with activities every week. After welcoming everyone back with a Labor Day Picnic, we have Yoga, Book Club, Daytime C&C (Capuccino & Culture), Evening C&C (Cocktails & Conversations), Weekend Biking, a Creative Pursuits workshop on mobile photography and a Scholars Salon with Helen Faller talking about Love Feasts: Silk Road Dumplings.

For our full-time working members, we hope you'll join us at the 2 weekend events and the evening Oktoberfest celebration. Next month, book club will be in the evening, as well as Evening C& C and Speakers Series. We'll make sure we get to see enough of you! :-)

In July, we sent out the Membership Directory with information taken from your application. We would like to send out an updated directory first week of September to include the new members so please send me corrections from the last one if there are any. We have created a closed group on Facebook for members only. You are invited to join it "AWC Members Only Group - PRIVATE". This is where member-to-member announcements/discussions/requests are posted.  We have members who are brand new to Berlin - do look in the directory for those with 2015 in the field "in Berlin since" and do reach out to say Hi. You remember what it was like!

See you soon!

Our Club is in full swing this month. Did you know that if you go to "Calendar" on the website, you can add the events to your google calendar or ical with just one click. The AWC Calendar on the website provides details of activities, however, you'd need to refer to the membership directory for private home addresses.

Yoga in English - Thursdays 10.30-11.30 - email if you'd like to join our group on a regular basis. Cost is 10-12 Euro per session based on how many people are there. The lessons are in a private home in Charlottenburg.

Daytime C&C (Capuccino & Culture) - Walking Tour of Mitte - The Scheunenviertel. Tuesday, September 8th, meet at 10.30 at Dee Rourke's house, tour starts at 11.30.  This is the neighborhood around the Hackesche Höfe - full of Jewish history, art galleries, an iconic ball room, trendy entertainment, art, and shopping. Meet at Dee Rourke's house for Coffee and Croissant, then Dee will walk us around her neighborhood - see link from National Geographic for info. Alternatively, those already familiar with the neighborhood could join My-Linh to visit the exhibit ImEx at the Alte National Gallerie. Afterwards, we'll have lunch together at one of Dee's favorite find.  You could join us for any part of the day, just breakfast, just the walk, just the exhibit, or just lunch.  RSVP to My-Linh at by September 7th.

Book Club - Our Book Club alternates between daytime and evening meetings every other month.  This accommodates our members' work schedules and also allows for bi-monthly participation. Schedule and book selection will be discussed at our first event in September, but if you are interested in hosting a future Book Club event you may also contact Linda at for more info.

The first meeting will be Friday, September 25th at 11am at Linda Sheehan's house. The book is: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. RSVP to Linda at to let her know you are coming. October’s Book Club will be hosted by My-Linh Kunst on Thursday, October 22nd at 7pm at My-Linh Kunst's house. The book is: Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Creative Pursuits - Mobile Photography - AWC member Karen Axelrad is a passionate „iphoneographer“ and in this workshop she will enhance your smartphone photography skills (iphone, android, etc). You will learn 1) simple tips to take better photos with your smartphone, 2) best apps to post-process with great examples of adding textures, making collages, double exposures, and more, 3) best places to share your work on the web, 4) blogs to follow for inspiration and tips.  Monday, September 14th 1pm-3pm at Kathy Aleksic's house (across from Ikea Spandau - Bus M45).  RSVP to by September 10th.

Scholars Salon - September 28th at 11am at My-Linh Kunst's house (Charlottenburg). Berlin is host to many visiting scholars. We hope to invite scholars to our "Scholars Salon" to talk about their work. The "Salon" is daytime or evening, dependent on the scholar's schedule.  I'm happy to announce our first: Helen M. Faller, Ph.D. will talk to us about her current book project: Love Feasts: Stories of Silk Road Dumplings. Love Feasts is a travel memoir with recipes that will speak to anyone who has tried to be a good parent while enduring a broken heart or yearned for unconditional love. Using simple ingredients, quietly formidable Silk Road warrior women make food that sustains love and loved ones. They teach a single mother who ran away after her divorce how to come home to herself. Helen spent nine months in Central Asia on a Fulbright researching this book and thought it would be great to read an excerpt from it to other American women and get your feedback. RSVP to by September 25th.

Weekend Biking along the Berlin Wall Trail (Mauer Weg) on Sunday, September 20th, 11am.  Bring your family and meet us at the Hauptbahnhof - main train station (Meeting place: Berlin Main Station / Hauptbahnhof… Invalidenstrasse exit in front of the main door).  We will bike 11 km along the first Etape (stretch) of the Berlin Wall Trail to the East Side Gallery, where we will take a break at a Cafe near S-Bahn Warschauer Strasse. After the break, you could leave the group or continue for part or all of the 22km of the 2nd stretch of the Berlin Wall Trail. There are U/S-Bahn stops along the way so you could stop any time.  RSVP to Nicki Herbers at to let her know you are coming.

Ronald McDonald House Berlin Dinner - Thursday, September 10th starting at 6pm, AWC Berlin will be cooking our quarterly dinner for the Ronald McDonald House Berlin. Come join us for a fun evening cooking and serving dinners for the families in the house.  Email Angelika at to let her know you're coming.  Address of the house is Seestrasse 28, 13353 Berlin-Wedding (transportation: U6 Seestrasse, Bus 106, N26 stop Antwerpener Strasse).

AWC Berlin is a member of FAWCO (, an international network of American and International women's clubs like ours in 40 countries. FAWCO is active as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with special consultative status to the UN Economic and Social Council. By being a member of AWC Berlin, you are automatically a member of FAWCO.

This month, I'd like to introduce you to a couple of FAWCO benefits for your teens (and you):

FAWCO Youth Cultural Volunteers Program - available to your teens 15-18 years old. The Cultural Volunteers module of FAWCO's Youth Program is designed to foster cultural awareness and volunteerism among FAWCO youths. FAWCO kids aged 15 - 18 will be hosted by FAWCO families for a week, and will experience a new culture while volunteering with local charities, working side-by-side with local teens. As part of the program, the participants will create a video about their experiences, and write individual essays reflecting on what they learn. Participants will be able to receive community service credits required by their International Baccalaureate program.

The pilot Cultural Volunteers Program was held in Dubai in July 2013, hosted by AWA Dubai (click on link for video, writings, etc.)

The 2014 Cultural Volunteers Program was held in Shanghai in July 2014, hosted by AWC Shanghai (click on link for video, writings, etc.)

The 2015 Cultural Volunteers Program is held August 22-29, 2015, hosted by AWC Mumbai.

So start planning with your teen to participate next summer!

The FAWCO Foundation also has Education Awards for you and your teenagers - I will come back to you when 2016 information is available.
