Novateur Portfolio Company Lexi Pharma Acquired by Altum Pharmaceuticals

We are delighted to have Novateur’s first portfolio company, Lexi Pharma, be acquired in less than two years since inception. Ali Ardakani co-founded and served as the CEO of Lexi to develop a molecule that inhibits osteoclast differentiation, to prevent bone resorption into a treatment for osteoporosis and certain cancers that affect bone strength. Ali Ardakani will be joining the board of Altum, headed by Dr. Ahmad Doroudian who continues as CEO while former Lexi executives Dr. Gina Stetsko, Dr. Angela Ogden and Dr. Hooshmand Sheshbaradaran will become CDO, CMO and COO respectively. Collectively, this team has filed 15 NDAs globally.

Altum Pharmaceuticals was founded in 2016 by pharma veteran Dr. Ahmad Doroudian. Previous to Altum, Ahmad founded Merus Labs which was acquired in 2017 by Norgine for $340 Million.

Altum is developing a pipeline in women's health products. Their lead candidate, AP001 is a patient-administered treatment for pre-cancerous cervical lesions that has completed phase 2. The merger with Lexi adds an osteoporosis indication (pre-clinical), and two phase 1 indications for bone brittleness arising from cancer.

We are excited and we look forward to begin our next chapter with Altum.

New Seaplane Service Between Downtown Seattle and Downtown Vancouver
What Does This Mean for the Life Science Sector in Vancouver?

Seattle is fast becoming a major biotech hub and is home to several biotech such as Juno Therapeutics (acquired by Celgene in January 2018 for $9 Billion USD), Seattle Genetics (NASDAQ: SGEN) with a market cap of ~$9 B, Fred Hutch and investors active in life-science such as Frazier, Polaris, and Arch Venture Partners. Several of the major pharmaceutical companies have extensive R&D facilities in Seattle including BMS, Novo Nordisk and Gilead.

A new seaplane service from Coal Harbour into Lake Union (beside Fred Hutch Cancer Center) takes about 45min thus allowing same afternoon return trips.

Ali Ardakani represented LifeSciences BC on the inaugural flight with Jay Inslee (Governor of Washington), the Honourable Navdeep Bains (Minister of Innovation and Economic Development), Brad Smith (President of Microsoft), Gregor Robertson (Mayor of Vancouver), and Alan Winter (BC's Innovation Commissioner).

This service will make our two communities much more accessible to each other and promote growth and success.

In turns out it was a major effort and required hand-on involvement, input and engagement of the private sector (both Harbour Air and Kenmore Air are family owned businesses), clients like Microsoft and Amazon, cities of Seattle and Vancouver, the Province, the state of Washington and both US and Canadian federal governments. According to some, Justin Trudeau had to personally get involved to iron out border custom issues on our side.

Well done to everyone involved and congrats to both Vancouver and Seattle. Let’s grow together and promote our life science sector together.

"We reached out to Novateur to help us navigate the numerous potential indications we could pursue for a molecule we were working with, using our oral drug delivery technology. Their expertise, guidance and thorough review of the possibilities was well researched, resulting in two recommendations, one of which we now intend to implement."
