We hope it proves to be a useful addition to your advising tool kit.
2nd Annual Advising Matters Professional Development Event Recap

The 2nd annual “Advising Matters” professional development event was held on Thursday, April 21st in the Catalyst Centre. This year’s event saw almost 50 UTSC staff attend, an increase of 10 attendees over last year! We changed the timing and length based on feedback from the last PD event.

We began our day with Annette Knott, Academic Programs Officer, who reviewed some of the new programs and courses we can expect to see in the coming academic year. (A summary of this information can be found in this newsletter.) After a short break, we welcomed Vice-President and UTSC Principal Bruce Kidd, who talked about his long and proud history at the University of Toronto and also spoke about the importance of the work we do with students. Our final speaker for the event was Daniel Cushing, an executive coach and public speaker, who discussed the topic of mindfulness and how it can improve focus, resilience and productivity. Daniel addressed the latest research on mindfulness and gave us the opportunity to practice a meditative technique.

Jennifer Ankrett, Director of the Academic Advising & Career Centre, thanked everyone for attending and also acknowledged the hard work that we do. During the lunch we gave out several door prizes; Betty Walters from Management definitely set the bar for enthusiasm after winning the final prize! Sobiya Syed and Cheryl Lepard, both from Accessibility Services, were the other lucky winners.
To everyone who attended, thank you and we hope you enjoyed the event. And for those who were unable to attend, hopefully we’ll see you next year!
