Learn What's New
Dear Community Members, Prospective Students and Families: In this issue, Intellectual Virtues Academy, A Long Beach Public High School highlights our most recent event, as well as some new information regarding our upcoming Taco Tuesday registration celebration on March 22nd.

You will also find out about the next steps in our charter approval process from the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE), as well as the next steps in our student registration process.

You are invited to join IVA Middle School for their Parent Academy seminar: How to know Your Child's Where, When, What and Who Online. March 10th, 6:30-8:00 p.m.
TAKE a 2nd LOOK Recap
We had a great turnout for our Take a 2nd Look Event on Feb. 23rd. The energy in the room was very uplifting! Several community connections were generated. Attendees were given a folder highlighting how students learn at the Academy, our master virtues, required courses, 9th grade course descriptions, as well as information about our advisory program, technology plan, college counseling program, and an updated extra-curricular list. Each student was also given a Academy water bottle.

Families participated in a lively discussion, thinking critically about the concept of luck and how it applies to them. We answered some burning questions about our facilities, teacher hiring, and charter renewal process. Then, after learning more about our extra-curricular, sports, and club options, students were able to participate in initial sign ups. Families ate a 9 foot sub sandwich and students connected.
TACO Tuesday Registration Deadline
Join us for our Taco Tuesday registration celebration on March 22 at 3601 Linden Ave. This is a great option to save on postage and get a free dinner! We will also help you complete your registration packet by making copies and checking all required documents. Spanish translation will be available. Even if you have not yet applied, bring your questions, your friends, and an appetite. The event is open to all interested students and families.
We will find about our charter approval by next week.  The Academy's Directors and Board Members will appear before the Board of the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) at its hearing on March 8th.  We will keep you informed of LACOE's decision after it is made public.
If you have applied, you will be receiving your registration packet by next week. If you have not received one by March 15th, please contact Summer Sanders, the Director of Community Engagement. The registration deadline is March 22, 2016

We are aware that you were offered a high school option through Long Beach Unified School District's CHOICE process. Although we are very hopeful for our charter approval, we want to encourage you to set your intent with LBUSD by March 9th through ParentVue.
As we move forward, you will be able to continue the registration process with the Academy if you wish, and make your decision to compete your enrollment by late April. Your registration materials (or letter of intent) need to be mailed or delivered to 3601 Linden Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90807 by March 22, 2016. If you have any additional questions, please contact me directly.

If you have not yet applied, we are still currently accepting applications. There are available spots for interested students. All students who would like to attend the Academy must submit an application. Click below or send an application c/o ACADEMY 3601 Linden Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90807.

This seminar will walk you through setting up your phone and your kids' phones proactively with simple things to create a permission-based environment.

It's not just just about monitoring your kid's web history or their chats (and most of us aren't even doing that).
  • It's keeping them away from predators that appear in favorite games, on innocuous spaces such as facebook, instagram and youtube.
  • Also showing you how to manage their online footprint until they can manage it themselves.
  • Seeing inappropriate content on youtube, vine, xsites etc.
  • And using unsafe apps can do everything from send out personal information to a whole community including locations, pictures and texts (that were privately sent).
Bring your phones and your kids' phones (knowing their passcodes) to set up some simple (and more complicated) safeguards.
