James J. McGrath, J.D., M.A. is an accomplished attorney, high school teacher, charter school board member and college faculty member who serves as the Academy’s Founding Director. Prior to joining the Academy full-time in August 2015, he practiced law with a prominent international law firm.  He also has served as an Officer on the Board of Directors of Bright Star Schools, a small network of high-performing charter schools in Los Angeles.
Before law school, James was a philosophy professor at Long Beach City College.  He also taught and coached high school mathematics and baseball. He earned his undergraduate degree in philosophy from U.C. Berkeley, a Master’s in the Philosophy of Education at U.C. Irvine, and was class president at UCLA School of Law.

"I’ve been driven by a vision that education should be guided and run by the very best teachers with the very best teaching approach research as to offer. Imagine my delight to discover "the IVA way" in 2013 listening to the radio about a small middle school in Long Beach, doing what I had researched and taught years ago at the college and graduate level!

Now that the mission has expanded to include a high school this year, it has been most rewarding to be given the role of Founding Director, re-experiencing that first excitement of discovery with the hundreds of faculty applicants from across the world who sought to join our founding team. In fact, every applicant who we deemed to be the best fit for each position accepted our offer.
Next week, our team will begin their training on the very personal, engaging, rigorous, and thought enriching qualities of an intellectual virtue model education. I enthusiastically await the opening of our doors on August 29th in order to share with your teenager, and with the Long Beach community, this transformative educational approach." - James McGrath
