We are excited to announce the hire of our first faculty member, Dustin Schmidt, who will be teaching the humanities courses (in ninth grade, Introduction to Applied Logic). He is seen here with his wife, Brenda, and their daughter, Violet. He and his family will be joining us from Seattle, Washington.
Mr. Schmidt has earned his master’s degree in philosophy, and  is currently working on his PhD with a focus on environmental ethics, at the University of Washington, Seattle. While at UW, he has taught a wide range of courses at the college level, including Logic, Introduction to Philosophy, and Environmental Ethics. He has a very impressive and comprehensive career, teaching students at all ages, including earning a fellowship to teach and develop curriculum for a high school International Baccalaureate course.
Throughout his academic career, Mr. Schmidt has been devoted to engaging K-12 students on a variety of topics in the humanities and philosophy. In his words: “The mission of the Academy supports an idea that I have long held, but also found lacking in education: that humanities education is essential for fostering attitudes that underlie well-functioning citizens and communities. Healthy communities require the ability of citizens to engage critically, openly, and compassionately. The Academy takes such engagement as the cornerstone of education. I am excited to be part of an institution that has the confidence in students to challenge themselves in these ways, and can help students prepare themselves to engage their world with strong, open intellectual characters.”
The Academy has final interviews scheduled for later this month for all other founding faculty positions.  We've had over 270 applicants from six different continents (no one has applied yet from Antartica), with local and national teaching awards, doing amazing things both inside and outside the classroom.  We look forward to updating you!
We have a busy next few weeks scheduled participating in several fun community events. We would love your help!  If you would like to join us in spreading the word about the Academy, please email James McGrath. We welcome creative ideas, connections, and/or helpful hands.  Students and parents are encouraged to join us! Check out Facebook for updates and share our events.
