LOTTERY
We held our first lottery event on Thursday, February 23rd. Thirty families joined us to watch the applicant's numbers swirl around in the big gold drum.

The Academy's staff were all present to meet our new families. The event was emotional. Families anticipated whether their number was going to be called as Mr. McGrath pulled each token, Dr. Tubbs read the numbers aloud, and Mrs. Sanders made them visible on the board.

Mrs. Day organized the list and announced the final numbers by the end of the night. Our lottery results are also posted on our website.

We are so excited to welcome our new families for the 2017-2018 school year. Prospective students will be receiving registration materials soon. If you have any questions, please call 562.283.4456 or email Mrs. Day
CURRICULUM CORNER
Hello Academy Families!
In English, we are preparing to read Harper Lee's works. "Works" because those students who have read Scout's famous coming-of-age narrative will read GO SET A WATCHMAN. The rest will discover what is wonderful about TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. We will approach the novels both historically and ethically.

In English, we will endeavor to understand the novels in their historical context, learning about important episodes in America's pre-civil rights history. Our aim in Writing will be to consider ways we can combat racism and fear in contemporary society.

Please pick up a copy of either novel and read with us. Feel free, too, to come to class and join our discussion. I will offer students the opportunity to write a solution paper: they will identify a contemporary manifestation of racism and propose a solution to it
