IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS

TITLE I AND “MORE THAN A MEAL TICKET”

We are doing a great job, but we have to keep going!

Parents, please help us by making sure your child has completed a meal ticket application. Your child can get a variety of fee waivers for the PSAT, SAT, AP exams, and College Applications. In addition, achieving the 65% application number allows us to fund teachers for tutoring, additional programs, and provide opportunities for field trips.

Here's where we stand compared to last year:
Venice Comprehensive
Last year-59.83%
This year to date-54.69%

STEM Magnet:
Last year-64.09%
This year to date-56.23%

Foreign Language Magnet
Last year-52.22%
This year to date-47.97%

PSAT
Last year SAT test scores were the number one factor for VHS students not getting into the college or their choice. We want our students to have the best opportunities to succeed.

Mark the date Wednesday, October 14th, for the PSAT. This opportunity is so important that Venice leadership has entered into a partnership with the district and College Board to be able to pay for all students to take the new redesigned PSAT.
  • Juniors, this is the only time you will be able to practice for the new redesigned SAT that you will take in the spring.
  • All students, by taking the PSAT you will receive valuable tools to search for and explore colleges, majors, scholarships, and more.
  • You can receive free information about admission and financial aid from colleges, universities, summer programs, and scholarship programs.
  • Students will be able to link their PSAT scores to Khan Academy for practice recommendations that will help you improve your skills for the SAT, school tests, and college and career preparation, all for FREE.

We expect all students to be present at school on October 14th for the school-wide administration of the PSAT. Your teachers will be talking to you about the test.
Seniors will be involved in special events.

SMARTER BALANCED EXAMS

Last year there was a huge opt out movement against taking the Smarter Balanced Exam. This has greatly hurt both the school, and the potential for our now seniors to attend quality universities and colleges. For an easy breakdown and comparison of Venice compared to surrounding West Side schools, please follow this link to a recent Argonaut article: http://argonautnews.com/common-core-test-results-west-of-the-405-by-school/

CSU’s and Community Colleges are now going to be using the Smarter Balanced test results for placement into Freshman classes. UC’s are likely going to follow. For students who score low, or have opted out, they will be placed in remedial courses. This will cost students both time and money. This is avoidable by students taking the Smarter Balanced tests this spring and trying their best.

We will have a number of positive incentives for the students if they score will both as individuals, as well as school wide. Fall 2016, students will only be able to earn a Jacket of Excellence if they took the Smarter Balanced exam during the Spring 2016. If students score high enough, we will accept the Smarter Balanced test scores to qualify students for a Jacket of Excellence.

Thanks for all you do to make Venice High a great place!

Your Principal,
Dr. Wiedoeft
