A note from Jack, an antiques dealer...

Dear Friends,

There are bits and pieces of architectural heaven all around us, but occasionally we travel to cities and towns where architectural heaven is in great abundance.  Natchez, Mississippi and Charleston, South Carolina are two such places.  Emily and I recently visited Natchez.  After a few days upon return, the stimulus I received is about to wear off but thoughts of floating staircases and perfectly proportioned architraves creating the bases of entablatures still remain.  Plato’s world of the forms as set out in his book Timaeus seems to come alive in a small town like Natchez with colors on freshly painted whitened wood and old rust red brick.

David Garner is the owner and tour guide at Choctaw Hall, one of the great Greek Revival showplaces in Natchez.  He was funnier than most of the comedians on television and worth the trip three times over.  In his tongue in cheek way, he amusingly complimented all in the crowd for being members of the last generation that still sees beauty when presented with the opulence of the past inspired by three thousand years of the world’s civilizations.  No doubt he knows that some in future generations will learn to perceive beauty as we see it but perhaps not in our numbers.  Brown furniture that seems to glow with graceful proportions and dolphin shapes and Jacob Petit porcelains envied by the caretakers of the Louvre filled the broad spaces of Choctaw Hall.

The handsome owner of Brandon Hall warned us that he and his newly married bride have only presided over this Greek Revival masterpiece for a mere seven months and asked us kindly to forgive mistakes in descriptions given of architecture and furniture.  He called an English epergne “coin” instead of “sterling,” which I gently pointed out.  As a guest, I should have avoided this pedagogical distraction.  However, he seemed not to notice and will learn the difference in time from someone else.  But other than that, he did a grand job.  Brandon Hall with its perfectly proportioned columns was bathed in moonlight that evening.

In a small shop, I purchased a daguerreotype, the earliest form of photography, that came from a home on Union Street.  The young woman’s face on its silver backing flickered in and out of sight as her photograph was turned in the morning light.  If her photograph could speak, I think she would say that her life was very different from mine a hundred and seventy-five years ago, but her emotions, longings and ability to perceive her life were much the same as mine.

There were many more houses that we saw designed with perfect forms as if seeking to please Plato and Pericles, sending thoughts of the Peloponnesian War hundreds of miles away to Sicilian shores.  But both of these men could talk to you about heavenly architecture and earthly war because that is what the world is like outside the Gates of Eden.

Follow the trail to Natchez, Mississippi!
The Natchez pilgrimage is not to be missed! It is such a popular event we advise you to make your reservations now for the next pilgrimage. You will be able to see houses like Jack has could even stay at one of Marcia's historical homes!  While you are in Mississippi, check out Picayune, Mississippi as well!
Re-use, Re-cycle, Re-purpose

Antique oatmeal plates find a new purpose this holiday season!  Why not use them for appetizers or for something like apples and dip?
Marcia's Favorite
Marcia's favorites this month are these lovely beds for adults and children!  These beautiful twin beds would be perfect in a child's room and either of these baby carriages could hold precious dolls.  Though probably not safe for use with real children, these carriages make great places to display antique dolls. To find these items, head to Gibsonville Antiques and Collectibles in Gibsonville, North Carolina and at Balsam Antique Mall in Waynesville, North Carolina.
Please let us know how we can better serve you!
