Academic & Staff Satisfaction Survey Underway

Please help us again this year by taking the UC Davis Academic and Staff Satisfaction Survey and providing feedback on all the Safety Services teams you worked with in 2020.
  • Emergency Management
  • Environmental Health and Safety
  • Fire Prevention Services
  • Occupational Health Services
  • Risk Management and Workers Compensation
  • Staff and Faculty Health and Well-Being
You have until March 12 to provide feedback that can help us improve our services.

Annual Chemical Inventory Update

EH&S is rolling out a feature in the chemical inventory system, Chemicals, that will automatically notify users when their last inventory certification date approaches its one-year mark. To help facilitate this feature, our campus will be adopting an annual inventory certification window of Jan. 16 to Jan 15 of the following year (i.e., Jan. 16, 2021 to Jan. 15, 2022).

Starting in March 2021
Campus users will receive automatic emails as their chemical inventory certification dates approach, similar to the notifications that are received when their hazard assessment is due for certification. Annual certification of the lab's chemical inventory will continue to be verified during the lab inspection process. EH&S will also continue to provide annual reminders starting in October, as the Jan. 15 deadline approaches.

Black Chemists You Should Know About

In honor of Black History Month, Chemical and Engineering News publishes an annual list of noteworthy Black chemists. Honorees include Marie Maynard Daly, the first Black woman in the US to earn a PhD in chemistry. Read Daly's story, and the stories of 16 Black chemists whose discoveries changed our lives for the better.

*NEW* Employer's First Report Guide

Workers’ Compensation has published an updated guide to completing the Employer’s First Report of Injury or Illness (EFR). Find the guide and other tutorials on the Workers' Compensation Resources webpage.

If you have any questions, please email rms@ucdavis.edu.

SafetyNet Updates

Safety Services performs periodic reviews of campus SafetyNets and updates them as new information becomes available or additional clarification is necessary. When a SafetyNet is released or revised in any significant manner, we'll notify the campus community through this newsletter and other Safety Services newsletters

  • SafetyNet 115: Machine Guarding was updated to better assist in identifying areas where a machine must be guarded, as well as hazardous motions and actions of various machine operations.
Any questions regarding these changes, or the SafetyNet update process, can be sent to researchsafety@ucdavis.edu.

Self-Inspections on Inspect

Research groups that have Biological Use Authorizations (BUA) and start a self-inspection in Inspect, will now see a profile that begins with the prefix BUA. The creation of BUA profiles are part of the last update to the RSS program, Bio.

When labs conduct a self-inspection as part of the lab safety review, they must select their lab group profile and not the one beginning with BUA.

Choosing Chemical Splash Goggles

Chemical and Engineering News tested six chemical splash goggles using craft paint to see which protected the user's eyes the best.

The accompanying article also addresses how to choose safety eyewear, including goggles that can go over prescription glasses.

The UC Davis Scientific Store carries an array of safety eyewear, but you can also fill out a form to request items that can't be found in AggieBuy.

Lessons Learned

UC Davis maintains a Lessons Learned webpage describing incidents that have happened on campus, including a recent large solvent waste spill. Researchers are encouraged to reach out to EH&S if they have any concerns - before an incident occurs.

Controlled Substance Program Updates

The UC Davis Campus Audit and Management Advisory Services conducted an audit of our Controlled Substance Program in 2019. One of the auditor's recommendations is that personnel refresh CS training every four years. This recommendation has been implemented into the Controlled Substances Program this year. For the re-training, those who know and understand the material, can go directly to the “Test” option, instead of going through the entire course module every four years.  This requirement is reflected in the campus controlled substances policy (PPM 290-70).

As you near your training anniversary, the Learning Management System (LMS) will send you a reminder that you need to complete the refresher training. You may also receive a direct email from EH&S asking you to renew your CS training.

Please email cs-info@ucdavis.edu if you have questions.

Biosafety Cabinet Safety Poster

A poster about biosafety cabinet (BSC) safety is available at this link. While the poster was created by a BSC manufacturer, it is not an endorsement of that specific brand.

Feel free to print the poster and place it next to your BSC.
